Do you need quick capture and encoding capabilities for video on your desktop? VirtualDub is a free, Open Source solution specifically designed for that purpose. VirtualDub might lack the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video in return. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters.

Unusable. Version 1.10.4 on Windows 10 gave the following VirtualDub Error when trying to open an AVI file: "VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable." So I'm unable to edit my AVI files and need to find other software that includes codecs needed to do the most basic function.

Doesn't let you use mp4 files but it saves to mp4? Doesn't make any sense. All my vids are mp4s.

Very cool program for AVI files. Who use AVI files today? Who cares about AVI? Who knows about frameservers etc? Where is AAC, AC3, Vorbis, H.264, MP4, MKV, FLV? I always download new versions of VirtualDub, and I always disappointed... (Thanks God, X.264 project can compress my MTS camera files to MKV)
