Persephone was the goddess daughter of Demeter, the goddess of Spring/Summer in ancient Greece. She was a goddess of farmers much like her mom, people depended on these two to bring in spring and new growth. Persephone became the queen of the underworld when she was forced to marry Hades. Hades kidnapped her and Demeter was distraught so for a time Spring never came. It was only after an agreement between all the gods was made for Persephone to spend one part of the year in the underworld and one out with the gods that Demeter brought Spring back to man.
