Epona was the Celtic and Roman deity of protection and fertility. Said to be a protector of horses and their riders, this goddess was associated with guiding souls to the afterlife on horseback. Epona is a translation from Celtic meaning Great Mare, however, the only known written accounts of her come from Rome as Celts had no form of writing as they believed it might interfere or diminish the importance of their practices. As with many Celtic deities, much of what we have is either passed down by word of mouth or written in Latin and translated.
