Mephistopheles: A variant upon a name given to a German folkloric demon whose presence appears in works regarding the early alchemist Johan Georg Faust. Mephistopheles is seen more as a servant of lucifer and mentor of those who would be damned. He collects souls for lucifer but only of people who wish to make a deal with the devil. This is unlike the literal devil Satan(Lucifer) who makes deals with all people he can tempt into corruption. In the legend Mephisto is often seen as being in a private hell of his own making because he already made a deal to work for Satan. He seems to implore Johan to not make the same mistakes he did and end up in his own damnation. Mephistopheles is seen as a greek compound of contradiction(Thought to mainly be made up for the story of Faust).
