This script was written to solve a problem when converting Chromebooks to standalone Linux.
The eMMC cards built into Chromebooks are simply to small (typically 16-32 GB) to make them useful as computers. There are typically no expansion slots either to insert an M.2 or SATA drive.
Using this script, a USB drive of any size can be used to store the user's home directory.
