Terminay 2.1.0 centralizes terminal launch through server-owned shell profiles with a complete UI for discovery, selection, and management.

Shell profiles and terminal launch

Core profile system

  • Introduced shell profiles as the single source for terminal launch configuration across all creation routes: startup, new terminal, tabs, splits, Desktop shortcuts, browser, local, and remote connections.
  • Profiles describe the program, arguments, environment overlay, and presentation metadata; the server resolves them through a unified canonical launch policy.
  • Created System default profile that requires no configuration, discovers available shells on the server machine, and falls back through a documented chain on macOS, Linux, and Windows.

Profile discovery and management

  • Implemented automatic discovery of configured login shells, installed executables, PowerShell editions, Git Bash, and WSL distributions based on platform and availability.
  • Added support for read-only discovered profiles that can be used once or copied into durable custom profiles.
  • Profiles remain server-owned; a remote client sees only shells available on the connected server and cannot select local-only executables.

Settings and user interface

  • Built a complete Shell Profiles settings page under Terminal to create, copy, rename, reorder, and edit custom profiles.
  • Profiles expose target selection, startup mode (shell default, login, non-login), ordered arguments as an array, environment variable overlay, optional icon, and color metadata.
  • Added New Terminal with Profile… action to select a profile for one launch without changing defaults.
  • Server and project defaults are separately selectable and editable; changing a profile affects only terminals created after the change.

Terminal launch resolution

  • Centralized launch resolution into one server component that validates executables, working directories, arguments, and environment on the machine that runs the PTY.
  • Working-directory policy now supports three modes: Current terminal or panel (default), Project folder, or Home folder; selection respects live cwds, project roots, and the server account home.
  • Canonical launch snapshots include the profile id, revision, executable descriptor, arguments, cwd, environment, and metadata; they are immutable and shared across all transport types.

Settings preservation and migration

  • Settings changes are revisioned and conflict-aware; concurrent profile or settings mutations either precede the launch snapshot or affect the next terminal.
  • Migrated existing shell.program, shell.startupMode, and shell.extraArgs settings to a deterministic Migrated shell custom profile, preserving argument boundaries and existing configurations.
  • Reset operation restores only System default and default working-directory policy; it does not terminate or recreate existing terminals.

Platform and testing

Electron and development workflow

  • Isolated local Electron end-to-end tests into a pinned Linux Docker container to prevent host window stealing and ensure reproducible test runs.
  • Made shell profile test coverage portable across platforms and CI environments.
  • Updated documentation and task specifications for shell profiles, terminal launch resolution, and server-owned workspace state.

Stability and compatibility

  • Unified startup-mode capability checking to reject unsupported shell configurations instead of applying guessed flags.
  • Preserved shell profiles on settings reset to recover gracefully from configuration errors.
