Terminay v2 establishes the server-client architecture as the canonical runtime, enabling secure remote access, multi-client support, and independent server/client versioning.

Server architecture

Unified server foundation

  • Moved terminal, file, Git, settings, recordings, and agent services to the dedicated Terminay Server runtime.
  • Server owns workspace state, PTYs, filesystem operations, and all persistence and security boundaries.
  • Desktop client and web browsers now connect to and render the server-bundled workspace UI.

Protocol and transport

  • Implemented the complete application protocol with reliable framing, bounded messages, and version negotiation.
  • Secured WebRTC data channels with device trust, challenge-response authentication, and signaling validation.
  • Added HTTP byte transports for local connections and fallback scenarios.

Client capabilities

Desktop application

  • Desktop now supervises an embedded Terminay Server and connects to it as a local client.
  • Added native window management, application updates, operating-system integration, and secure credential storage.
  • Support for multiple concurrent server connections in separate windows.

Web client

  • Browser clients can discover, connect to, and manage remote Terminay Servers.
  • Device enrollment and reconnection workflows support persistent remote access without persistent authentication.
  • Responsive UI adapts to mobile and desktop viewports with touch-friendly interactions.

Remote access

WebRTC connectivity

  • WebRTC peer connections with secure werift and node-datachannel runtimes for headless servers.
  • Hosted signaling and relay services enable connections across firewalls and NATs without port forwarding.
  • Automatic reconnection and session recovery on network transitions.

Pairing and trust

  • Device pairing establishes cryptographic trust between clients and servers with PIN enrollment.
  • Remote access control and scope boundaries prevent unauthorized terminal, file, or settings access.
  • Revocation and re-enrollment flows for managing device trust over time.

Workspace and sessions

Server-owned state

  • Projects, panels, workspace views, and workspace snapshots persist on the server and sync across all connected clients.
  • Terminal sessions are identified by immutable session IDs, allowing safe reconnection and multi-client transparency.
  • Panel identities and order survive split, move, and reorder operations.

Rich terminal features

  • Native PTY sessions with full signal support, scrollback, and activity signals for agent and recording events.
  • Support for multiple simultaneous terminals per project with independent scrollback and input queues.
  • Reliable terminal multiplexing with backpressure and flow control.

Recordings and automation

Recording capture

  • Server captures authorized terminal input and output, session events, and Git operations.
  • Recording sessions are scoped by project and terminal identity, preserving audit and replay integrity.
  • Playback mode scales large sessions and reveals active terminal states for historical review.

Macros and workflows

  • Macro runner executes templated sequences with conditional steps, wait predicates, and dynamic substitution.
  • MCP server integration binds tool control to workspace repository and user settings.
  • Quick Push workflow automates commit, branch creation, and pull request workflows with AI-assisted commit messages.
