I have several feeds set to "automatically update the feed every xx xx"
(activated, e.g. "every 1 day") and "automatically update the feed on start-
up" (not activated). Now, I thought to save some time at RSSOwl's start-up
when deactivating the "auto-update of the feed on start-up"-feature and
additionally hoped that way I wouldn't get too many new entries on start-up
but have them spread over the day. To my surprise those feeds which don't
auto-update on start-up don't get auto-updated at all but only when I manually
do so.
How does said update feature work? Does RSSOwl check my system time and knows
when 1 day, 2 days, 3 days have passed even if I close it during night time or
does it start counting anew from every start-up (given my rhythm, this way of
course it would never reach a full 24 hour cycle and I might wait in vain for
my updates to come..). Then, wouldn't the option to deactivate the update on
start-up be meaningless if one wants to update some of his feeds let's say
every 3 days (and if he closes RSSOwl before that 3 days have passed)?
I usually turn on my PC in the morning and shut it down in the evening. Do I
have to set all the feeds to auto-update on start-up or to less then one day
(maybe 6 hours) when I want to get those updates? An explanation would be much
appreciated. Thank you

Its right that RSSOwl does not remember reload times between restarts, so it
will only reload after 1 day if you let RSSOwl running. I think its a typical
pattern to let RSSOwl run in the background (e.g. system tray) and let the
computer go to hibernate or sleep instead of shutting down.

Hi bpasero, thank you for your quick reply. Is it true then, that every
setting to auto-update a feed every 1 day+ is meaningless if I shut down my
computer at night? Of course to set to auto-update to every 3 days and
simultaneously let it being checked on start-up would be a contradiction in
terms.
If so, I would urgently ask for a feature which lets me update not-so-
important feeds say once a week [it should remember the last time (in
accordance to the system time) a feed was updated and auto-update it according
to my settings or when set period already elapsed at the next system start).
But I had been updating feeds once a week in the past and that worked fine
(despite shutting my computer down every night). Is this change new to RSSOwl
2.1 or am I completely on the wrong track here/misunderstood something?

Hm, this is code I was not looking at for many many months, maybe my memory is
wrong and indeed I am storing the reload time, let me check at home in the
sourcecode and report back. I can for sure say that nothing changed there for
2.1.

So I checked and the times are not stored in the DB. Sorry, at this time this
is unsupported and I am not planning to change it soon. The workaround is to
keep RSSOwl running (sleep / hibernation / standby is fine).

Thank you for checking into this. But one question again: I checked my RSSOwl
again and feeds stopped being auto-updated on July, 15th (which of course is
the day I upgraded to the freshly released 2.1 version). Before 2.1 the
"automatically update the feed on start-up"-feature wasn't there, and my feeds
kept being updated correctly every three days, once a week etc. (despite
closing the PC down at night..). Why did that work then and stopped working
with the update to 2.1? Thank you

Dont know, nothing changed there. I also did not add any new feature to reload
feeds on startup, that has always been there. You can send me your log files
so I can check if something else could cause this.

Oh, I wasn't aware that the "auto-update on start-up"-feature wasn't new. That
must have been a case of unattentiveness on my side, sorry. It might be that I
only perceived it as new and started to change all my settings which is why
feeds stopped working the way I was used to (I know, it's embarassing and if
really true I am honestly sorry for that). This would also mean some serious
errors in reasoning (or rather a big case of not thinking at all) because
wanting them to be updated once a week and simultaneously setting them to
being updated on start-up which in my case means every day, well, doesn't seem
very reasonable.. Ok, maybe I am stupid, the problem is I cannot remember for
sure how my settings were before I "discovered" this "new" feature.. I know
now that I was aware of it sometime in the past before I "forgot" it.
Ok, I will send you my logfile anyhow and maybe you can find something.
Despite the confusion I still want to "officially" ask for a feature to
periodically update feeds in accordance to the last time they were updated,
even with RSSOwl being shut down in the meantime. Maybe at some point in the
future?
Thank you and have a nice day

I checked your logs and was not able to find something suspicious, I suggest
you enable the automatic reload of feeds on startup for all your feeds.

Thank you very much and sorry again. I'm already in the process of organizing
my many feeds anew.
