Robrix's second beta release is here, with some big new features: voice dictation (native speech-to-text), a new login screen designed from scratch, collapsible summarized groups of state events, panes that show room members, pinned messages, threads, and lots more! We also spent a lot of time polishing the UI and fixing bugs everywhere, in Robrix, Makepad, and the Matrix SDK itself.

Highlights from this release

  • A new room action bar that offers quick access to the list of Room Members, Pinned Messages, and Threads
  • You can resize panes, move them to any side, or pop them out into their own tab or full-screen view
  • Dictate messages with your voice! Try it out by pressing the new mic button in the message text input (and other places)
  • This uses the native speech-to-text recognition provided by the underlying OS, via our new robius-speech crate
  • Fully redesigned the login screen to show only the login methods supported by your homeserver
  • Explicit support for browser login (OAuth 2.0), MAS, and the legacy SSO providers, including creating a new account
  • Groups of state events in a room are auto-collapsed into a summary (yes, finally!)
  • You can expand/collapse them, and your scroll position in the room won't jump around (we promise)
  • Groups can also span any time period, so we can neatly collapse state events across many days or even months
  • Proper support for backing up and restoring your encryption keys
  • See and manage the users you've blocked/ignored in the settings screen
  • Completely rewrote the image viewer with super smooth pinch-to-zoom gestures
  • Now you get the native feel of Android or iOS gestures, plus Android's double-tap-then-drag gesture to zoom
  • Big performance improvements on Linux and Android (yes, it was already fast but is now even faster)
  • Thanks to Vulkan support newly added in Makepad, which is now the default with proper runtime discovery and fallback
There are tons of other UI & platform improvements too, click to expand! * Sleek scroll bars that fade out and are always properly positioned * "Cancel" gestures (pressing Escape or the Back button) now only close or stop what's in front or is most recently active (like speech recognition) * The invite screen shows more details and offers a "reject and block" button * Tooltips were redesigned to be flawless, even on touch screens * Jumping to an older message now always works even when you're locked to the bottom of the timeline * Redesigned the dropdown menus in the settings page to work properly on touch screens and keyboard nav * Text within a user or room pill now lines up perfectly with the surrounding text * Status and error messages are shown in full instead of being truncated with an ellipsis * Picking someone from the `@mention` popup no longer closes your on-screen keyboard * Tapping a link on a touchscreen no longer leaves it hovered * Robrix remembers your window's normal size even if you quit while it's maximized (or on macOS, while it's fullscreen) * Loading older messages is more reliable: the "Loading earlier messages..." notice stays up until those messages actually show up, and Robrix continues back paginating until there's actually messages added. * Sending a message with Enter (or Cmd/Ctrl+Enter) now keeps your cursor in the message box, so you can start typing the next one right away * Complete rework of the mobile view mode "stack" UI, where selecting a room or going back will slide in and out very smoothly, like native Android animations

Fixes to the Matrix SDK

We've also been busy testing and fixing the Matrix Rust SDK, and have updated Robrix to the latest version with our various improvements.

Click here to view the full list of our Matrix SDK improvements * [#6934 avoid panics/underflow due to subtraction in space member calculations](https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-rust-sdk/pull/6934) * [#6935 fix issues with latest event handling/updating](https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-rust-sdk/pull/6935) * [#6956 Don't assume a known room is joined just because it has no invite state](https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-rust-sdk/pull/6956) * [#6967 Add cheap, efficient functions to query the parent/ancestor spaces of a space or room](https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-rust-sdk/pull/6967) * [#7114 Don't reload all pinned events every time a room's info changes](https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-rust-sdk/pull/7114) We also have lots of other fixes to the Matrix SDK that haven't been upstreamed yet (but will be soon): * A deleted thread reply is cleared from its thread and isn't reflected in the reply count or latest reply shown under the root message. * The latest reply shown under a thread's first message is no longer that same message, which could happen in encrypted rooms after you opened a thread whose replies couldn't be decrypted. * In a thread, Robrix now stops loading older messages as soon as it reaches the message that started the thread. * Back pagination is way faster now, and also more clear. The loading indicator stays on screen until the room timeline actually shows the older message history it fetched.

Changes we made to Makepad since the last release

As always, a significant amount of our effort is spent upstreaming improvements & fixes into Makepad, such that Robrix and everyone else benefits from them.

Click here to expand the full list of Makepad changes that are relevant to Robrix * Escape, Android's Back button, and the mouse's back button now act only on whatever is in front, so one press closes just the popup, menu, user profile, or image viewer you're looking at, and nothing behind it. Makepad now keeps track of which open thing is frontmost and hands each press to that one alone, rather than to whichever widget happened to see the event first, and hidden views no longer get a say. ([makepad#1232](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1232), [makepad#1236](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1236)) * On phones and in narrow windows, opening a room slides it in smoothly, with the same 450 ms timing and curve that Android uses between screens, and going back slides it out the same way. The slide used to start thousands of pixels off to the side instead of right at the edge of the screen, so on a phone the room stayed out of view for about a quarter second before sliding in. A slide also starts one frame later now, so a room that takes a moment to draw doesn't make it skip ahead. ([makepad#1288](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1288)) * Tooltips show up every time now, and when one doesn't fit beside what you're hovering over, it flips to the other side instead of squeezing into a narrow column at the edge of the window. They used to be drawn invisibly first and then measured on a short timer, and whenever that timer won the race, the tooltip stayed open but invisible. Long tooltip text also wraps properly in a narrow window now instead of getting cut off, and on macOS, resting your fingers on the trackpad no longer hides an open tooltip. ([makepad#1256](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1256), [makepad#1278](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1278)) * Scroll bars now show up while you scroll or hover over them, then fade back out shortly after you stop, like the overlay scroll bars on macOS, and a faded-out bar lets your taps through to whatever's under it. The timeline's scroll bar also keeps the right size as older messages load in, where before it could get stuck at its old size or vanish entirely. On desktop, clicking near the bottom edge of a room tab now always selects it, since an invisible scroll bar handle had been grabbing those clicks whenever more tabs were open than could fit. ([makepad#1264](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1264), [makepad#1254](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1254)) * Jumping to an older message, like a pinned message or the one a reply points to, now actually gets there when you're at the bottom of the timeline, which is where you usually are right after opening a room. Before, the timeline kept following its newest message and pulled itself right back down while the jump tried to scroll up. Jumps also land exactly on their target now, rather than sometimes overshooting it. ([makepad#1261](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1261), [makepad#1284](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1284)) * A collapsed group of joins, leaves, and profile changes costs next to nothing to draw, even when it hides thousands of events, since the timeline can now skip right over hidden items instead of laying out each one as an empty row. Makepad's widget tree also forgets rows once they scroll out of a list, where before it kept an entry for every row a list ever dropped, cached lookups and all, for as long as the app stayed open. ([makepad#1284](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1284)) * On desktop, switching back to a room's tab, or coming back from the settings page, now shows everything that changed in the meantime, like new messages and edits. A hidden tab or page can't draw, so Makepad dropped any redraws it asked for, and showing it again only redrew its outer layer. The timeline draws into its own layer that's only redrawn when asked, so it kept showing what it had before until something else redrew it, like scrolling. Now showing a tab or page redraws everything inside it. ([makepad#1290](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1290)) * Dictation (new in this release) works just like typing: dictated words go in as normal edits that you can undo a phrase at a time, and you can keep typing, moving the cursor, or composing with an IME while it listens. Makepad's build tool also lets an app add the permission descriptions that iOS requires before an app can use the microphone or speech recognition. ([makepad#1224](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1224), [makepad#1221](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1221)) * The message box's scroll bar now runs down its right edge instead of sitting on top of the end of every line in a long message, and its handle keeps up as you type. ([makepad#1230](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1230)) * Messages with malformed or unusual HTML now show all of their content, and the ones that used to crash Robrix don't anymore, which matters since anyone in a room can send one. A collapsed `
` section no longer hides the rest of the message, a link with bold or italic text no longer shows up empty, code blocks with formatting inside keep their indentation, and character references like `é` show the right symbol. We reworked Makepad's HTML parser to recover from broken markup the way a web browser does, and stress-tested it with millions of generated inputs. ([makepad#1222](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1222)) * Mention pills now sit on the same baseline as the words around them, instead of just being centered on the line, since Makepad can now line up everything in a row by its text baseline, like inline elements on the web. On Linux and Windows, pills next to wrapped text also no longer sit a few pixels low, and the lines of a paragraph are spaced evenly like on every other platform. ([makepad#1270](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1270), [makepad#1269](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1269)) * Buttons that are meant to leave keyboard focus alone, like the show/hide password button and the new microphone button, now actually do, so tapping one keeps your cursor in the text box and the on-screen keyboard stays up. A button you reach with Tab can now be pressed with Space or Enter too, and the new login screen's buttons keep their labels centered when they wrap onto two lines. ([makepad#1226](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1226), [makepad#1241](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1241), [makepad#1238](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1238)) * Sending a message with Enter (or Cmd/Ctrl+Enter) now keeps your cursor in the message box, so you can type the next one right away. Submitting a Makepad text input always took keyboard focus away from it, which is right for most text boxes but not for a chat box, so we added an option to keep focus after submitting, and Robrix turns it on for its message box. ([makepad#1292](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1292)) * The dropdowns in Robrix's settings now work properly on touchscreens, after we fixed up the touch, keyboard, and popup handling in Makepad's newer DropDown2 widget and moved Robrix over to it. They work better from the keyboard too: Space or Enter opens the list, the arrow keys move through it, and typing a few letters jumps to a matching option. ([makepad#1276](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1276)) * On touchscreens, tapping a link in a message no longer leaves it stuck in red, and tapping a radio button no longer leaves it tinted, since touch never sends the "hover out" event that would clear those states. With a mouse, hovering over a link now shows Robrix's green hover color instead of the red "pressed" color, and pressing a radio button then sliding off it before letting go no longer selects it. ([makepad#1257](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1257), [makepad#1258](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1258), [makepad#1259](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1259)) * Opening a screen for the first time, like the settings page, is quicker, especially on Android. Makepad now generates shader code about 3.7x faster (measured on a Mac), caches more of its text layout work, and no longer spawns an extra process on every Android launch just to name its shader cache. We also fixed two GL regressions upstream before this release picked them up: drivers that compile shaders in parallel had stopped using the shader cache, and Android was repainting the whole window about 40 extra times per launch. ([makepad#1279](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1279)) * Linux: on Wayland, Robrix now renders with Vulkan whenever a hardware Vulkan driver is available, and falls back to OpenGL ES (what every Linux build used before) on X11, without a Vulkan driver, or when the only Vulkan device is a software one. Quitting on Wayland with an NVIDIA GPU also no longer segfaults. If Vulkan misbehaves on your machine, run Robrix with `MAKEPAD_GPU=gl` to go back to OpenGL ES. ([makepad#1237](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1237)) * Linux: on Wayland, the mouse wheel and touchpad no longer scroll backwards, and your natural scrolling setting is respected instead of flipped. The mouse's back button works there now too, like on other platforms. And wherever Robrix draws its own minimize, maximize, and close buttons, like on GNOME and Windows, only a left-click or a tap can trigger them, so a stray right-, middle-, or back-click no longer closes the window. ([makepad#1216](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1216), [makepad#1277](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1277)) * Linux: on GNOME, Robrix's window now casts the same drop shadow as native apps, and you can resize it by grabbing just outside its edge like any other window. Double-clicking the title bar maximizes it, and right-clicking it opens the window menu. On KDE Plasma and wlroots-based desktops like Sway, Robrix now uses the desktop's own title bar instead of drawing its own. ([makepad#1215](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1215)) * Linux: on Wayland, a window you left maximized comes back maximized after a restart, rather than in true fullscreen over your top bar, and un-maximizing it goes back to its earlier size. On both X11 and Wayland, moving the pointer out of the window now clears whatever it was hovering over. And wherever Robrix draws its own window buttons, like on GNOME and Windows, they now fade out of their hover color smoothly instead of flashing dark. ([makepad#1255](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1255)) * macOS: typing with an input method like Pinyin no longer sends your message halfway through. Pressing Return to pick a candidate used to also send the message, Escape to cancel a composition could also cancel the message edit or reply you were working on, and Backspace on the last composing character also deleted the character before it. ([makepad#1223](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1223) by @ymote, [makepad#1227](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1227)) * macOS: Robrix keeps running properly while it's minimized to the Dock. On macOS 14 and later, Makepad's UI loop was driven by a display link that never fires for a minimized window, so the app stopped processing updates entirely, and even Ctrl+C or `kill` wouldn't quit it until you restored the window. It now falls back to a plain timer while minimized, and goes right back to drawing in step with your display as soon as the window is restored. ([makepad#1244](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1244), [makepad#1251](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1251)) * Windows: dragging a room's tab to another spot in the dock, or to an edge to split the view, works now, and pressing Escape cancels the drag. Before, dragging a tab did nothing, since Makepad on Windows didn't recognize a dragged tab as something it could drop. Hover cursors also work properly on Windows now, like the hand over buttons, tabs, and links, or the text cursor over the message box. Before, the very next mouse move turned them back into the arrow. On macOS and Linux, a tab you're dragging now shows a grabbing hand cursor. ([makepad#1291](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1291)) * iOS: touches with more than one finger are tracked properly now, since each finger keeps the same ID for its whole gesture, which the image viewer's new pinch-to-zoom relies on. Makepad also finally hears about touches that iOS cancels partway through (it had been listening for a misspelled UIKit callback), so an interrupted touch ends cleanly instead of acting like a finger that's still down. ([makepad#1276](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1276)) * Android: pressing Back now closes the on-screen keyboard on the first try. Before, in a text box near the bottom of the screen like the message box, a leftover request to show the keyboard reopened it right away, so it took a second Back to close it. Moving from one text box to another also keeps the keyboard up now. Before, the text box you left hid the keyboard just before the new one asked for it, and Makepad mistook that for you closing it, so the keyboard could stay down until you tapped the new text box again. ([makepad#1288](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1288), which includes a fix by @ymote) * Robrix's packages no longer include a math font of over 1 MB that it never uses. Makepad's new font packaging had started forcing that font into every app, along with Inter and Roboto Flex (over 3.5 MB in all), so we changed it to ship only an app's theme fonts plus the ones it declares, before this release picked that up. ([makepad#1247](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1247)) * Robrix still uses its own fonts on iOS and Android, a macOS window moved between displays with different scaling still draws at the right scale, and dock tabs on Linux can still be dragged more than once. A big sync with upstream Makepad had broken all three, so we fixed them upstream before this release picked them up. ([makepad#1239](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1239)) * Shrinking Robrix's window from the desktop layout down to the mobile one won't crash on your next click. A change earlier in this release made that crash possible, so we fixed it in Makepad before it ever shipped, by treating an area left over from an earlier draw as stale instead of crashing on it. ([makepad#1285](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1285))
