Robrix's first beta release is here! This version has some great new features, but it mostly focuses on making Robrix more complete, clear, and correct. There are a lot of small improvements and fixes in order to tie up loose ends and close out some long-pending to-do items.

Highlights from this release

  • Every message you send now shows its live status: upload in progress 🔄, fully sent ✅, queued while offline ✈️, or failed ⚠️
  • You can compose messages while offline and they'll be auto-sent when you reconnect
  • Easily retry or cancel anything that didn't send, including attachments that you upload
  • Complete overhaul of read receipts: your read marker is tracked more precisely, and updated consistently and efficiently
  • More settings for read receipts: send them privately or publicly, mark rooms as read manually or automatically upon scroll, or just hide all read receipts entirely
  • Unread badges are now shown in all room list categories, and are more accurately synced
  • You can now jump to a user's read receipt (in the user profile pane) to find their latest seen message
  • Invites: always clearly show who invited you, and make invites to spaces very obvious (in the spaces bar and the rooms list)
  • Added more slash commands: /me, /notice, /spoiler, /shrug, /rainbow, /invite, /dm, /whois, /ignore, /nick, /leave, and more
  • Improvements to the settings page:
  • Support uploading your own avatar via the "Upload Avatar" button
  • Clearer explanations of what is happening during device verification
  • Support opening your homeserver's account management page via the "Manage Account" button
  • Robrix gracefully and efficiently handles some strange situations:
  • Rooms and threads getting removed or re-added during sync, or their background timeline sync tasks getting destroyed and re-created
  • Getting rate-limited by the homeserver when scrolling backwards or searching through room history
  • Membership events in rooms being duplicate but legit
  • Added new troubleshooting tools: "Clear Cache and Reload", "Copy Room Diagnostics", etc
  • Sending your location to a room works on Linux now, thanks to the improved robius-location crate
  • Arch Linux packages are available for both x86_64 and aarch64
  • Android release builds are now smaller and faster
  • Lots of fixes on Windows OS (within Makepad): handle suspend/restart on laptops, the GPU driver getting reset, bad window size or location after attached displays change, missing resources (font/icons), etc

[!IMPORTANT] Android users: the v1.0.0-alpha.2 APK from our last release had the wrong name and package ID (org.makepad.robrix) due to some changes in the makepad packaging action that slipped through. This release fixes that to be rs.robius.robrix, so it will install alongside the old v1.0.0-alpha.2. You can safely uninstall the old one.

Fixes to the Matrix SDK

We also made several fixes and improvements to the Matrix Rust SDK:

Changes we made to Makepad since the last release

As always, a significant amount of our effort is spent upstreaming improvements & fixes into Makepad, such that Robrix and everyone else benefits from them.

Click here to expand the full list of Makepad changes that are relevant to Robrix * Read receipts follow what you've actually read, so scrolling up to hunt for an older message no longer marks the newer ones as seen. The timeline's PortalList widget now tracks how far you scrolled and in which direction, separately from any movement it makes on its own, so auto-scrolling and newly-arrived messages can't fake it. ([makepad#1185](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1185)) * Pinch-to-zoom on a fullscreen image no longer leaks your second finger's touch to whatever's behind it, so the timeline underneath stops scrolling out from under you and you don't hit buttons back there when you lift off. ([makepad#1187](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1187)) * On mobile, a room's title lands in the header as soon as the name loads, even while the screen is still sliding in, since the navigation stack now reports the screen it's moving to rather than the one it's leaving. Unrelated but in the same batch: scripts can show and hide any widget now, not just container views. ([makepad#1191](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1191), [makepad#1194](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1194)) * Windows: a GPU driver reset or a hybrid-GPU handoff across sleep no longer takes Robrix down with it, since the D3D11 backend now spots the lost device and rebuilds it along with every texture and shader, and text can no longer disappear for good because a glyph upload got skipped on one frame. Two copies starting at once can't hand each other a half-written shader out of the shared cache anymore, and a window drag that gets interrupted no longer leaves the app repainting flat out instead of back on vsync. ([makepad#1198](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1198), [makepad#1200](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1200)) * Windows: launching an app from a shortcut or launcher that doesn't set a working directory no longer gives you a window with no text and no icons. Resources are now looked for next to the executable as well, not just in whatever directory the process happened to start in. ([makepad#1196](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1196)) * The saved size and position of an app window is now checked against the displays that are actually attached, so quitting on a monitor you've since unplugged no longer brings the app back off-screen. On Windows, quitting while minimized no longer saves that minimized geometry and restores the window as an unusable sliver, and a drag that only moved the window is now remembered too. ([makepad#1197](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1197)) * Linux: on Wayland, the app's UI zoom no longer breaks clicking. Clicks used to miss by the zoom factor, drifting further off the further you got from the window's top-left corner, and text and icons on HiDPI Wayland screens were rasterized at 1x, so they looked soft. ([makepad#1188](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1188)) * Linux: two failures that used to take the whole app down are handled now. An X11 protocol error is logged instead of exiting the process, and on Wayland a saved window size the graphics driver can't back opens at the default size instead of panicking on startup. ([makepad#1201](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1201)) * Android: apps now run on devices that use 16 KB memory pages, which Google Play requires for anything targeting Android 15 and up, and it's smaller too, roughly a megabyte off the download and six off the installed size. Release builds link Rust's standard library into the app instead of shipping it as a separate library that was never aligned for those pages. ([makepad#1177](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1177)) * iOS: a bug while handling a touch, key press or redraw no longer kills the whole app, since that one event gets dropped instead. The message, source location and backtrace now land in the device log too, where before you got a bare crash with nothing in it. ([makepad#1178](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1178)) * Borders on reaction pills, the message input, and just about every rounded box in the app kept drawing through this makepad upgrade. A shader compiler change had started silently dropping the last statement inside an `if` block, which is exactly how a guarded border gets drawn, so we tracked it down and fixed it upstream before this release picked it up. ([makepad#1182](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1182)) * F10, F12 and Shift+F12 still belong to the app. Upstream Makepad had started wiring three developer overlays to those bare keys in every app it builds, where a stray F10 tilts the whole UI into 3D and Escape stops closing anything, so we put all three behind an opt-in flag before they could reach a shipped build. ([makepad#1209](https://github.com/makepad/makepad/pull/1209))
