I found that I can not set the address of the SMTP server to deliver emails for PO. Seems the only option is install an SMTP server on the server I install PO. Since in our company, the mail server is located out-side of the company LAN, this is kinda nasty and doesn't make sence.
Am I missed something, can PO be configured to use an external email server which need username/password authentication to deliver email messages?

    Hi Silverhoof,

    1. You could install a local Postfix and then configure that Postfix with a "smarthost" to send the mail to your external SMTP server

    2. Please check /web/projop/etc/config.tcl for "SMTP". You can configure the mail server there.

    Cheers!

    Cheers!

After trying for more than one week, I finally managed to configure use of external smtp server with my ubuntu 9.04 project-open using sendmail.
The following links where useful and I want to share them in hope of making it easier for other newbies like myself:
    1. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1419204  (for installing sendmail)
    2. http://www.scalix.com/wiki/index.php?title=Configuring_Sendmail_with_smarthost_Ubuntu_Gutsy   (for configuring sendmail to use my external SMTP server provided by my isp)

Overall difficulty: easy - very easy (once the necessary information was found)

I am a complete newbie with barely any experience in ubuntu or linux. I didnt even know how to create or edit a new file in ubuntu and had to google it. But it all came together in the end. Hopefully, a board or documentation admin will be able to consolidate the information available out there and create a proper how-to.

On another note, I do appreciate the tremendous work that the creators and developers have done in creating project-open. Furthermore, being in the service business myself, I do not condone the concept of "freeloading" and understand the desire and need of the creators to sell support services and develop a paying customer base. However, I feel that allowing free use of basic modules should not be used as a bait-and-hook tactic but rather as an invitation to loyal relationship building and development: If I could afford to pay for a custom installation I would have probably never come across project-open. A tight budget was the main incentive for investing the time to research, find, download, setup, configure and try project-open in addition to all the other tasks associated with running a customer service based business. I am happy with the concept of a platform that can grow with my business as opposed to an intermediate-use band aid that I will dispose of when I can afford to do so and project-open seems to almost fit that bill. I say "almost" because communication between clients and team members is recognized as important in po's architecture but is not facilitated accordingly (see: lack of smtp how-to).
Of course, this is just my opinion and it may very well be wrong. Either way, I want to make it clear that project-open is a phenomenal tool with exceptional value and for that I am grateful to the team that conceived  and created it.

    Guys
Silly question from a newbie - how do I get to the config file your are describing? I cannot find the mail parameter in the usual "parameters" section of admin. How do I get to this parameter configuration? Any help appreciated. My P-O admin page address is:

You need to log into your server, where the PO is installed.
If you are using the default vmware installer, then log in with the user "root" and password "root". Then, open the file with text editor or through terminal.

    Thanks very much srangelov
I was able to edit the config file no problem but the system is still giving me error message and seems to be pointing still to localhost:25

Is there somewhere else I should change the setting also?

FYI - I have already restarted the server etc and that didnt help.

    Thanks
    Adam
