  • I gave it a 1 star (I prefer zero) because like a bunch of other Linux OS's out there were the developers of the live version they want to be lazy and NOT leave their OS open. I got to find out the hard way. I went off the premise it was LIVE and like all the LIVE working distros that wouldn't require a password! Maybe put it up front for ALL to see with a big sign that says "Before trying you have to jump thru these hoops in order for it to work, because if you dare to walk away to try and eat something and or answer the phone your work is lost!" Not that I went thru that which I did, but needless to say I never did find out its ease of use, features, design and or support. Just look up lost "XYZlive (XYZ replace with distro of your choice) password" and the lazy distro's will populate like you wouldn't believe. FYI, what I use I tell my customers to use. This is why this distro is sinking to the bottom at 43 of the distro listing on DistroWatch and a few others. Don't worry thou, I'm using this a my 1st template for a few other distro's pulling this garbage as well since they popped up while trying to figure out the live password for this one...

A simple inquiry to the forum page of this site, you would be given the answer "live" to log back into the Live environment. If you want to save and store your data and settings during each session, either install the OS to a suitable large capacity USB or create a USB with persistence.
  • I've been distro hopping for many months, trying a myriad of different distributions—from Linux Mint/LMDE to Debian/Devuan, to Artix/Arch. After all this exploration, I can confidently say that PeppermintOS is the fastest, most stable, stylish, and lightweight distribution I have found. PeppermintOS has truly impressed me with its stability and tailored user experience. My PC isn't particularly powerful, so I was always on the lookout for a lightweight distro. Unfortunately, Linux Mint was too heavy for my system. Debian's net install showed promise, but the boot-up time was too long and the performance was just mediocre. Devuan offered better performance (15% less RAM usage) and speed, but I ran into issues with the init systems and crashes, whether it be OpenRC or runit. After further searching, I had almost given up hope on finding the right Linux distribution until I discovered PeppermintOS. While I don't fully understand the technical details of how PeppermintOS's net install differs from Debian/Devuan netinstall, it certainly feels more stable and precisely tuned to my needs. If anyone can assist me in understanding the specific differences between PeppermintOS and Devuan/Debian net install, I would love to know more. The default Peppermint desktop wallpapers and the login/logout wallpapers and animations are absolutely amazing! They add a touch of elegance and uniqueness to the overall experience. I'd love to know where the wallpaper folder is located so I can explore more of these beautiful designs. If you're looking for a reliable, stylish, and lightweight Linux distribution, I highly recommend giving PeppermintOS a try. It's been an outstanding choice for me, and I'm sure it will be for you too!

Thank you for your kind words and extolling the virtues of PeppermintOS. Our Netinstall (the Mini) is a stripped down and custom construction of the Debian and Devuan packages. The developer (Manuel), has evolved this package as we adapt it to our needs, the current version you used, probably has the right balance between minimalism and the kitchen sink approach.
  • my NVIDIA Corporation GM107M [GeForce GTX 860M] card (rev a2) when installing drivers i have problems " installed nvidia-kernel-dkms package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10 " i searched google for a solution but did not find it :( dpkg: dependency issues prevent nvidia-driver package from being configured: nvidia-driver depends on nvidia-kernel-dkms (= 525.147.05-7~deb12u1) | nvidia-kernel-525.147.05 | nvidia-op en-kernel-525.147.05 | nvidia-open-kernel-525.147.05; however: The nvidia-kernel-dkms package is not yet configured. The nvidia-kernel-525.147.05 package is not installed. The nvidia-kernel-dkms package provides nvidia-kernel-525.147.05, but it has not yet been configured. The nvidia-open-kernel-525.147.05 package is not installed. , so I uninstalled the drivers and use only intel (on linux mint xfce worked fine) lenovo y50-70 , xanmod kernel , the rest works fine

  • this os was absolutely the easiest to install and use. Boots up so quickly and so stable, probably due to Debian base, and updates, though few, are seamless. Just love it. The developers nailed it with Peppermint. I cannot say anything bad or critical of it. Great job developers.

  • I installed peppermint os on my old dell vostro 1015. It works as good as new, I regret not installing it earlier. My laptop is now saved from trash. Being linux beginner, community was very helpful for me and I managed to install all required packages for my laptop to run smoothly. Big thanks for whole team, you did a great job 🥰 Virtual hug

  • I love PeppermintOS, I have been using it for many years on and off and always come back to it again. It's a real community effort and I know that it will continue to grow from strength to strength. If you want a distro that 'gets out of the way' and lets you have the choice of what you want to install. This is the distro for you. Any questions, there is a wonderful community of people always happy to help.

100% on point.... thank you so very much for your support and kind words!
  • I have used Peppermint on and off over the years since version 4, the old Ubuntu base would throw in some issues occasionally so im glad its on Debian now. As much as i liked the old prebuilds that were available up to 10, i prefer the simple no bloat direction that the current version has gone in. It allows me to setup what i need without having to remove other bits later & makes a nice base to build upon.

  • I used Linux Mint on a laptop for nearly ten years. Now I've reverted back to using my old pc tower: 3Ghz duo core intel cpu & 4gb ram and tried out some other distros: Debian 11, Mint LMDE, Zorin, Q4OS, Sparky, before settling on Peppermint OS: as I came to like the idea of an OS based on Debian stable and found Peppermint to be the best one suited to my old pc. I very much like that I could install Peppermint with only the software I wish to use, i.e no bloat. Next, I like Nemo above all other file managers, and I like Xfce as much as I like Cinnamon. Updates, via xDaily, couldn't be more straightforward. I'm really enjoying using Peppermint and the few snags I've encountered have been ironed out quickly on the Peppermint forum as well as on the excellent Xfce forum. I'm a simple desktop user, but of late have taken to learning more and more terminal commands: I've made some errors, but used Timeshift to negate their effects. I'm really enjoying Peppermint OS.

  • For me, PepOS has worked flawlessly. Some software has been tricky to install and to get to work correctly, but that was expected due to PepOS minimalist effort to keep the bloat out of the system.

  • Pepper is a excellent distro I using in my PC Ryzen 2600 , GTX 1050 (pepper64)and in my job in a usb stick (pepper64-devuan) recently I revive my old netbook a old atom with 1GB RAM (pepper32-devuan). A advice if you using Nvidia like me install nvidia-driver after install. Ok but life is don't perfect right ? Pepper is easy, cool minimall and power, but the design can be best! A sugestion a wallpaper start with grub in usb-live or iso-live please just Black Screen with red and white is nice!

Will take your suggestion at heart and we will look at a more simplified wallpaper for the grub. Thanks so much
  • Glad to see PeppermintOS back. I'll admit the switch from Ubuntu to Debian took some adjustment, but its a good learning experience. The best thing about Peppermint is it makes it easy to set it to your liking, so that it gives you the OS you want.

  • l lof love Peppermint, it's one my favorite distro, but i keep looking for another, for the simple reason that the screen display on my computer is too dark, and there is no nothing i can do to fix it. There is no brightness contol anywhere in Peppermint. i am a very bag fan of Linux but i am not able to do complicated commands in the terminal by fear that i will screw up the whole system.

Hi there, Thank you installing PeppermintOS. Brightness is usually a hardware adjustment, for example on my Dell Latitude 5430 laptop, this can done by the following methods. 1. Via the BIOS look for Video -> LCD Brightness; there are two settings one for battery (usually set at 50%) and the other for AC power is normally set 100%. 2. The easiest being by the keyboard by pressing the Fn and then the Brightness keys found on the up and down keys of my Dell. If your computer is not a laptop, you will need to check your monitor's brightness settings. My AOC monitor there is pointer style control stick which you have press to call up the menu and navigate the various settings, to check or adjust them. Team Peppermint :)

  • Peppermint team choice's of basing this new version on Debian Stable, in my opinion, has been brillant as it works beautifully on my 2011 HP G61 equipped with Pentium Intel Celeron Dual-Core processor! Thus, my thought about it is truly great!

  • If you plan for a daily driver distribution, then peppermint OS 2022-02-02 can be a choice for you today! Papirus Icon theme with Peppermint Red Dark style looks excellent.

  • Any chance on providing a development repository of Git type access to the source for the Peppermint build system? As a creator of my own Debian based Xfce desktop ISO produced with the live build tool, I am curious as to what configuration options are used for Peppermint OS. Thanks. Thank you for the quick reply and link. I do appreciate it! :-)

Sure, what you are looking for is here: https://codeberg.org/Peppermint_OS/PepDistroConfigs We do nightly and testing builds the .sh you will be most interested in is.... pepbld.sh That is the one that builds the public ISO after we have approved all our changes for production Look in pephooks for our additional scripts... hope that's what you are looking for if you have any questions, suggestions or ideas do let us know. **Updating comment for accuracy purposes.** (7/3/2023 - Edited- - we built bubbles while using buildbot to automate our process for the builds) the bubbles repo is here: https://codeberg.org/Peppermint_OS/bubbles We still do nightly and testing builds, via bubbles using python. Buildbot is used to manage the CI/CD processes.
