The .iso file Pearl-1.5-xfce-alt-amd64.iso is an alternative version to the original Pearl-1.5-xfce-amd64.iso file. All info below applies to this version except the following changes. Autohide on top panel and bottom dock - Turned Off by default Default Theme - Changed to a lighter metallic OS X style theme, changed BG Wallpapers Resized Top panel Whiskermenu GUFW - Firewall added VNC Viewer Remote Desktop Viewer Samba Server added Network Tools added -------------------------------------------------------------- --> Quicktip To pin icons to bottom dock open app icon will dock to dock then right click on icon on dock and choose "pin to dock" There are 3 web browsers installed Firefox Opera and Seamonkey I recommend choosing your favorite and pin that one to dock. Things seem to run smoother when just one or two pinned to dock. <----- ################### PEARL LINUX 1.5 64 BIT ################## Please use "custom" as username when installing Leave password field blank hit enter. That's for a live usb (with YUMI, USB Creator etc.) useage and installing the system. By default Pearl Linux 1.5 uses autohide for both the top panel as well as the bottom dock. To view top panel by default simply right click on top panel, once you unhide it by moving mouse over top panel area, and choose panel preferences and uncheck autohide .. Pearl Linux is very stable out of the box with or without the desktop effects being enabled however REMEMBER ..if you do not need or want the desktop effects don't turn Compiz on. On some computers you can notice a HUGE difference in speed. Please see the document called Pearl Linux Quick Tips Help.wps made with the WPS office suite installed, or Pearl Linux QuickTips Help.pdf also in the directory /home/yourname/Documents. For the Linux newbees this very short document can save u alot of time especially while customizing your desktop effects if you decide to use them. ########## IMPORTANT NOTE! Pearl Linux 1.5 Includes the Apache2 Web Server ############## By default your Apache webserver is Live upon install. It's default document root is /var/www/html Within your home directory there is a symlink pointing to /var/www/html. The Seamonkey web browsers default start page shows your active homepage. The Address is http://localhost Your homepage can be seen to the public by using your IP address. You can see your public IP address on top panel. Its a good idea to install a firewall especially because of the active servers installed. best way to do so is: open a terminal and type --> sudo apt-get install gufw <-- To remove webserver --> sudo apt-get remove apache2 <-- ---->>>>>> Why Pearl installs more than one version audio and video programs and some quick Tips that may help ya<--------- Simple If it plays well with other installed software and is not too large of the acual file size there is always a reason for doing this. Example: Why Cheese and guvcview. Honestly I like both but to easily record audio and video from webcam or capture device you would use guvcview because cheese records video only. Then why you ask VLC as well. VLC will always be on our distros for the many options you have even tho most explainations on net of how to acually use it are indeed hard to understand. I use webcam and capture cards often. VLC is always running because its used to display my cature cards input of our parking lot outside capture and its very easy to activate btw to do so simply open vlc go to media/open capture device/video device name (blue arrow down) and you will see some like /dev/video0 (1st video input) or /dev/video1 (2nd video input and so on). and then click play at botton . It will play till you turn it off and use hardly any system resources. If you have an old video capture device you are trying to get Linux to see it and its not ... stop wasting time go to either amazon or ebay and get an "easycam" they cost from $5-15.00 bought many for testing and all work fine ( for easycam audio and video recording I recommend using audio card input over the audio input of easycam for simply the ease of setup... which is simple. Many capture devices should work fine because Linux is really good at plug it in and go these days I'm just offering what I have learned after many of hours of trial and error to save time so you can just use your computer. lol In past I've been flipping between Banshee, Rythnmbox, etc. With this release of Pearl our default is SMPlayer which I hope remains default but I love clementine for a Music Only Library cause its almost too fast. perfect really. however in my opinion Linux really needs a MEDIA PLAYER thats handles audio and video both in a attractive interface... could it be SMPlayer ? Thats video for audio... lol well I run a recording studio so I'm sure this is possibly a bit overkill but I always have a reason. lingot ... guitar tuner ... works well always picks up sound through webcam mic etc. audacity because simple one track saving and editing nothing commpairs. Audacity can be used for multitrack recording however Ardour is much better .. Still looking for a better solution in that department acually.
