Orfeo 1.5.3 — Native mode sounds like Studio, clearer Settings
23. 10. 2026
- Orfeo's native mode now sounds like Studio: the same balance, placement, room and punch, measured song by song.
- Both sound engines play a song's own volume swells and fades, and tracks sharing a channel now share its mix.
- Clearer Settings: the engines are now GM, Studio and Native, with a Shared or Exclusive choice for Native. The MIDI Keyboard page is tidier, and tooltips can be switched off.
Download: Installer (recommended, updates itself) · Portable (no install) · Microsoft Store (updates through the Store, usually within a few days)

### Changed - **Clearer Settings.** - Every page now opens with a short heading. - **Sound engine:** the three engines are now called GM, Studio (formerly Samples) and Native. Under them you see your sound card, its mode with sample rate and buffer, and the latency. The description shows only the engine you've picked. - **Low latency mode** (Native): two buttons, Shared and Exclusive, each explaining what it does. Exclusive warns that Orfeo takes over the whole sound card. - **Setup** shows the same engine buttons and rows. - **MIDI Keyboard:** the cards sit three across, at equal height. *Reconnect automatically* has its own card. "No keyboards connected" and your keyboard-to-speaker delay sit at the right of the tab row. The *Sound & Latency* tab has the Delay check, a *Playing live* card rewritten to be easier to follow, and the delay offset with General MIDI sound. - **Tooltips can be switched off.** A new *Tooltips* switch under *Appearance*, in Settings and in Setup, is on by default. Turn it off once you know your way around, and the hints stop popping up when you point at buttons, knobs and icons. A knob still shows its value while you turn it. Windows' own small tips, such as file names, aren't affected. - **Choose whether a keyboard switches Native to Exclusive.** A new switch under *MIDI Keyboard › Sound & Latency*, on by default. It's recommended when you play along on a keyboard and nothing else on the computer needs sound. Off: Native stays in the mode you choose. - **The Library's "Right-click for options" hint** now appears just above the song, inside the Library, and only after you rest on a song for 3 seconds, not every time the mouse passes over. ### Fixed - **Orfeo's native mode now mixes songs exactly like Studio.** Parts placed to one side of the stereo picture, such as a piano, guitars or a horn section panned left or right, came out 1.5–3 dB quieter in native mode, while parts in the middle got slightly louder. Their reverb stayed as loud as before, so those parts sounded pushed to the back of the mix. Instruments recorded in stereo, like the piano and horns in many sound sets, were also squeezed to one side, losing their width. Native mode now places every note left and right exactly as Studio does, keeping stereo instruments as wide as they are. Measured part by part on eight songs and two sound sets, every part is now within about 1 dB of Studio in level and in its left–right placement. Before, levels differed by up to 4 dB and placement by up to 13 dB. This works for every song, with nothing to set. - **Orfeo's native mode no longer sounds thin next to Studio.** It played about 4 dB hotter into its peak limiter, which then flattened the bass and drum hits all the time, so loud songs lost their punch and the midrange came forward. Its level now matches Studio before any limiting. Its ceiling sits just under full scale, as Studio's does. Measured on whole songs, both engines now sound the same within about 1 dB in every octave, from the deepest bass to the top. - **Parts that share a MIDI channel now share its mix.** Many files set a channel's volume, panning, reverb and chorus once, then add more tracks on that channel without repeating them. Orfeo gave those extra tracks full volume, centre position and no effects, so a pad, an organ or a lead on such a track could come out too loud and dry, or in the wrong place. Every track now takes its channel's settings from the song, wherever in the file they're written. - **Both sound engines now play a song's own volume moves.** Many arrangements fade parts in and out, bring a guitar up for its solo, or swell the strings, sometimes hundreds of times in one song. Both engines used to hold every part at its starting volume, so those moves were lost. Now they play as written. The Console faders still work as before: pulling one down turns the whole part down, swells included. - **Orfeo's native mode now puts songs in the same room as Studio.** It used FluidSynth's own reverb and chorus, which sound different from Studio's. Now it uses exactly the same reverb and chorus as Studio, fed the same way: each part's amount from the song, plus the touch the sound set gives each instrument. Measured on several songs with two sound sets, they're within about 1 dB of Studio. Switching engines no longer changes how close or far away the music sounds.Every version since 1.0, in full: CHANGELOG
