OpenSuperClone-Live (OSC-Live)

OSC-Live is a Linux live OS designed for running OpenSuperClone (a fork of HDDSuperClone). This project is intended to serve as a modern replacement for "HDDLiveCD", the live OS that shipped with the original HDDSC project.

Features, Changes, and Fixes

  • Switch to OpenSuperClone, an actively maintained fork of HDDSuperClone. OSC retains all original functionality of HDDSC, plus some bug fixes, UI improvements, and an updated kernel driver.

  • Base OS switched to Xubuntu 20.04, made possible by the aforementioned kernel driver upgrade.

  • Updated secure boot certificates to improve compatibility with modern UEFI firmware. Also prevents a warning message when creating a live USB with Rufus.

  • Uses standard isohybrid format. Allows live USB creation using virtually any tool that supports Linux/Ubuntu. Notably, MacOS users can now create the bootable USB with software such as Balena Etcher (or dd).

  • Boot menu includes premade entries for disabling specific ATA ports for use with Direct AHCI Mode.

  • Automount is disabled. Volumes can be manually mounted easily using the GUI file manager.

  • FSCK is skipped at boot.

  • Power management and screensaver is disabled.

  • GUI customization to improve look and feel.

Included Software:

  • OpenSuperClone v2.4.1
  • OSCViewer v2.4.1
  • DMDE v4.2.0 Free Demo
  • gsmartcontrol / smartmontools
  • nvme-cli
  • hdparm
  • gparted
  • fdisk
  • gdisk
  • ghex
  • gddrescue
  • ddrutility
  • sleuthkit
  • ntfs-3g
  • exfat-fuse
  • exfat-utils
  • hfsplus
  • hfsutils
  • hfsprogs

Notes:

The live OS filesystem is read-only / non-persistent by default. Any files saved to the "OS drive" will be lost upon shutdown. Project files, disk images, etc. should be saved to a secondary / external storage device that is different from your boot drive. Even if the live USB has been configured with a persistence file, changes may not be correctly written if the OS is not shut down cleanly (e.g. crashes).

This operating system is designed to be used as a live OS, and not permanently installed. As such, the Ubiquity Installer is removed by default. Attempting to install the OS may cause unforeseen changes to packages or config files that negatively impact the functionality and reliability of this software.

Known Issues:

  1. When secure boot is enabled, OSC fails to compile Direct AHCI, Direct IDE, and Virtual Driver. Current solution: Disable secure boot in BIOS. Investigating signing the required modules to solve issue.
