A utility to produce MTF (modulation transfer function, a measure of edge acuity) maps of images. The program will automatically detect dark rectangular objects on light backgrounds, and extract MTF values on all edges. Can help to tune SLR autofocus. See http://mtfmapper.blogspot.com for more usage examples.

Features

  • Automatically extracts dark (black) rectangular objects from images, and measures the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF, a measure of image sharpness) across the edges of the rectangles. Measurement is performed using the "slanted edge" method, similar to ISO 12233.
  • Using a special test chart (.pdf supplied), measure the point of sharpest focus relative to a reference point, i.e., measure front- or back-focus in DSLRs
  • Measure the MTF (sharpness) of your lens across the field of view
  • Works with many image formats, including JPEG and various raw formats
  • Provides feedback on chart orientation (for some chart types) helping you to correctly set up the chart relative to the camera sensor
  • Use the GUI to visualize and compare MTF/SFR curves between different images, or different edges within the same image

User Reviews

  • a wonderful software. thanks for your share!
  • MTF Mapper is a really helpfull tool to check optical performace of lens-sensor-systems. Also the background information provided are going deep into the topic.
  • Wonderful program. I use this all the time to compare lens resolutions and calibrate them in a scientific way. Really helped with my new Sigma 150-600 and its USB dock to calibrate 4 focal lengths and 4 distances per focal length. You rock, Frans! I'd appreciate a more detailed description of the "annotated" edge photo labels, e.g. yellow "0.10 (0.50)" versus green "0.10 (1.00)" versus blue.
  • Generates Edge Spread Functions, Line Spread Functions, MTF/OTF Spatial Frequency plots from slanted edges - and much, much more. No installation required, but ability to work in Command Line necessary for Windows executables. Highly recommended!
