The file named "Lac09p77-x86_64.AppImage" is a precompiled, executable binary program that launches Linux Air Combat Version 9.77 from a self-contained, self-extracting, multi-file archive containing all prerequisites. It is configured according to the well-known "AppImage" conventions for universal compatibility among all of the most popular LINUX distros using industry-standard "x86" architecture. Accordingly, if you just want to run LAC without compiling it, this is probably your best, simplest option. Just download it, mark it as "executable" according to well-known LINUX norms, and then execute it from a bash shell. If your hardware is based on x86 architecture and if your LINUX distro is "mainstream" and has been updated since about December of 2020, it will start right up!

The file named "Lac09p77ForSteamDeck-x86_64.AppImage" is similar, but it configures the controls for the Valve "SteamDeck" portable linux PC.You can see this control arranegement here among others:

https://www.askmisterwizard.com/2019/LinuxAirCombat/LacOnlineDocs.htm

Other than the control mapping and the "Mumble VOIP application" (which works slightly differently on the Steam Deck), version "Lac09p77ForSteamDeck-x86_64.AppImage" is identical with "Lac09p77-x86.AppImage", and if you have the appropriate LacControls file in your ~/home/.LAC folder it will work with your own controls according to your own choices. But if you DON'T have the LacControls file it will be built for you for the Steam Deck controls.

If LAC's built-in menus do not respond to your mouse clicks, you should also download our "LacMenuLauncher" and use its menus to access LAC's functions.

Ubuntu users that have updated to the very latest offerings since Version 23.04: You will need to enhance your Ubuntu Desktop Linux system with the old "libfuse2" library in order to use AppImages. This is easy to do. Just issue the following command from a bash shell:

   sudo apt install libfuse2

You can control LAC's aircraft with a joystick/keyboard, with mouse/keyboard, with a console game controller/keyboard, or even with just a console game controller and no keyboard at all. For further information and a diagram of controller options, take a look at THIS web page:

NOTE THAT APPIMAGES ARE STILL NEW TO US. LAC APPIMAGES HAVE BEEN USED WITH SUCCESS ON MANY, MANY DESKTOP DISTROS FOR X86 HARDWARE. THIS VERSION IS NEWER THAN THE PRIOR APPIMAGE VERSIONS. IT CONTAINS ALL OF THE NEWEST CHANGES PUBLISHED SINCE THE PRIOR APPIMAGE. IT IS FULLY INTEROPERABLE WITH PRIOR VERSIONS, AND UNLESS YOU WANT TO COMPILE FROM SOURCE CODE, THIS IS YOUR BEST, PRODUCTION-QUALITY OPTION.

YOU SHOULD EXECUTE IT FROM A BASH SHELL. IT MAY OR MAY NOT WORK ON YOUR DISTRO, BUT THOUSANDS OF USERS HAVE ENJOYED SUCCESS WITH OUR APPIMAGES ON ALL OF THE MOST POPULAR DISTROS AS OF THIS WRITING IN SEPTEMBER OF 2024. IF YOU WANT TO AVOID LAUNCHING FROM A BASH SHELL, YOU CAN INTEGRATE IT INTO YOUR DISTRO'S LAUNCH MENU SYSTEM, BUT YOU WILL NEED TO BE AWARE OF ANY UNIQUE TOOLS THAT YOUR DISTRO USES FOR MENU EDITING.

You can learn more about AppImages and LAC from our "LAC Distributed in universal, binary AppImage format" forum at:

   https://sourceforge.net/p/linuxaircombat/discussion/lacandappimages

(Any other files named as "*.AppImage" are prior published versions. All of our AppImages can be downloaded and executed in the same way as described above, but the latest version offers more features and greater compatibility.)

You can always learn the differences and new features of every published version of LAC from our online "ChangeLog" page here:

RASPBERRY PI USERS: APPIMAGES ARE NOT FOR YOU! This AppImage version of Linux Air Combat works ONLY for "X86" hardware architecture, but your Raspberry Pi is built on "ARM" architecture. The precompiled Raspberry Pi version is available elsewhere in our SourceForge download area, along with downloadable shell scripts to compile the source code for your raspberry pi if you like to work from source code.
