L.A.R.R.I. is an animated 3-D model of the human vocal tract, and the human organism as its vehicle. Advances in medical imaging have led to increasingly detailed and accurate visual representation of the biomechanics of the human voice. These methods all seek to solve the central problem of understanding the human voice: it is internal and therefore invisible. Techniques such as MRI and laryngoscopy, for example, allow us to "see inside". These techniques let us see through tissue and bone, but at the expense of perspective and context. By leveraging the power of the open source 3-D modeling app Blender, L.A.R.R.I. provides researchers and consumers with that context and perspective.
The reference and research functions rely on the open-source program Blender, and hence the python programming language. The research interface is intended to be used in conjunction with experimental data, whereas the reference product is intended as a self-contained, user-friendly app.
