Hi Everybody,

Several people have asked me, "how do I get started?", so I thought I'd answer
it here. Please note that I am neither a Windoze nor a Mac person, so these
instructions will be very Linux centric.

These instructions have been updated for version 24.

1) Download the ISO file from Sourceforge. It will be named something like this:
   andy_<version>_64bit.iso

2) Verify that the download is not corrupt. Please don't skip this step!
   a) On a Linux system, run this command: md5sum andy_<ver>_64bit.iso
   b) Compare that value to the value shown on Sourceforge
   c) Follow these detailed instructions to find the known good value
      https://sourceforge.net/p/kb1oiq-andysham/discussion/1789007/thread/9e4b0279bf/
   d) If you cannot run the md5sum command, there is another way to verify
the integrity of the downloaded file. Stay tuned.
   e) Please don't omit this check. Many strange problems have been
shown to be caused by a corrupt download. If you report a problem,
this will be the first question I ask of you.

2a) An optional step is to use VirtualBox and boot the ISO file.
After logging in, it should be fully functional.

3) Create a bootable USB thumb drive, containing the data from the ISO file.
On Linux, I recommend MultiBootUSB version 9.2.0 (or greater) since it creates
a USB thumb drive that can be booted in a system with legacy BIOS or UEFI.

Note that there have been issues with some software that doesn't properly
create a bootable USB thumb drive. I recommend MultiBootUSB because
I know it works on a Linux system. This software works on Linux and Windoze.

You will need a USB thumb drive that is at least 4GB in size.

3) Put the USB thumb drive into the computer that you wish to use
   for ham radio.

4) Boot that computer, and make sure it really boots the correct device. You'll
know if you did it correctly because it will say "Andy's Ham Radio Linux" all
over the screen. You may have to go into the BIOS of your computer to get the
   correct device to boot.

5) A text screen will appear with several options. One of the options is
to type the work "check" to verify the integrity of the medium. I recommend
that you run this check to be very certain that nothing has been corrupted.

6) After the check succeeds and you reboot the USB thumb drive, choose "live"
at the boot prompt on the text screen. Press "enter" and the computer
   will boot.

7) At the "Login" prompt, you'll see "Andy's Ham Radio Linux" and a Tux pengiun
wearing head phones. So far, so good!

8) At the Login prompt, type: ubuntu

9) For the password, type: kb1oiq
Note: this is my ham radio callsign, and the third character is the
number one, not the lowercase letter "ell".

10) Now, play with the software! The "Applications" menu is at the top left
    of the screen.

11) You still haven't touched your hard drive. You can exit with no ill
    effects, but I hope you don't! :-)

12) OK, you're still with me - good! If and only if you decide to install the
software on to your hard drive, take heed to save any interesting data on the
    destination hard drive!

13) Be sure that you have the network enabled and that it is working! The installation
might not succeed if the network is inaccessible.

14) Be sure to read the README FIRST file. It describes any issues, and their
workarounds. It can be found in this menu:
Applications -> Andy's Ham Radio Linux -> Documentation -> README FIRST
    or in this text file:
      /usr/local/share/doc/Andy_Ham_Radio_Linux/HOWTO_Fix_HD_Install_V24

15) On the desktop, one will find an icon labeled "Install Ubuntu remix".
Click (or double click) that icon to start the installation of
"Andy's Ham Radio Linux" onto your hard drive. It is possible in some cases to
install it next to an existing operating system (dual boot). It is also possible
(and frequently desirable) to erase your entire hard drive. Please be sure you
know what you're doing here - save any interesting data prior to taking this action!

16) After the installation succeeds, reboot the computer, and this time, make
sure it boots from your hard drive.

17) If you get this dreaded error during the installation, it is because you're
attempting a legacy mode installation with a disabled network
    (see instruction 13, above):

The grub-pc package failed to install into /target

    Solutions:
      a) turn on the network and ensure it is working correctly
      b) Boot the computer with UEFI enabled, and then do the installation

18) Log in using the user name and password that you typed when you installed the software.

19) Have fun!!!!!!!

Please read the documentation contained in the Andy Ham Radio Linux -> Documentation menu.

Please note that I cannot possibly support every program in this software
collection. Please search the internet if you have problems.

Have a lot of fun, and 73!

Andy
