HatchZip is an open-source archive extraction utility designed to unpack large compressed files while minimizing additional disk space requirements. Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, it provides both a graphical desktop application and a command-line interface. Unlike conventional extractors, HatchZip progressively releases storage occupied by the original archive as files are extracted. This approach allows users to extract archives on drives that cannot accommodate both the compressed and fully extracted contents simultaneously. The software supports ZIP, 7z, RAR, tar, compressed tar, and multipart archives. Before extraction, it calculates available storage requirements and checks whether the operation can complete safely. Its crash-resistant design supports resuming interrupted extraction operations. Users can also choose conventional extraction to preserve the original archive when sufficient storage is available.
