FrostWire 3.2.2 build 778

Distributed Search is now much better at finding other people, even when they are right next to you on the same Wi-Fi.

What's new

Nearby devices find each other. While Distributed Search is running, FrostWire now announces itself on your local network and listens for other FrostWire phones, tablets and computers on the same Wi-Fi. Before, two devices behind the same router could not reach each other through the network's public address, so they often never met. FrostWire only does this on Wi-Fi with its own built-in node (not on mobile data, and not when you use a remote IceBridge), and every device it finds is still verified before it is trusted.

Peers are found over UDP. FrostWire used to check each peer on a separate TCP port, which phones and computers behind a router usually could not open. Peers are now verified over the same UDP connection the network already uses, so a peer that can be reached by UDP can be found. The "identity port" setting is gone. Peers on older versions that only announce a TCP port are not discovered by this version.

A more reliable start. When the DHT is crowded with unreachable peers, FrostWire now checks many candidates in parallel, tries the servers it already knows (and a built-in seed server) first, and stops retrying dead addresses right away, so Distributed Search finds the IceBridge servers much more often.

Two clear choices in the wizard and in Settings. Joining the IceBridge network (you can search, and people searching can find the torrents you are seeding by keyword) is now separate from sharing your catalog (people can browse everything you are actively seeding and crawlers can index it). Unchecking the catalog no longer reads as hiding from search, and the catalog switch is turned off while you are off the network. Both are on by default and you can change them in Settings > Distributed Search.

Fixes you may notice

  • Browse Shared Torrents shows up on more results. Peers that share their catalog were only marked as browsable when a search returned a handful of results. Larger answers lost the mark, so the Browse Shared Torrents option did not appear.

Powered by jlibtorrent 2.0.12.9.

Full changelog

  • fix:Peers are now verified over rUDP instead of a TCP identity port, so a peer behind NAT that can be reached over UDP can be found; the DHT announces the rUDP port, phones and servers no longer need an open TCP port, and the "identity port" setting is gone (peers on older versions that only announce a TCP port are not discovered)
  • fix:Distributed Search finds the IceBridge servers when the DHT is crowded with unreachable peers: candidates are probed in parallel, bootstrap and known servers go first, dead endpoints back off, and a built-in seed server is always tried
  • new:Phones, tablets and computers on the same wifi now find each other directly — while IceBridge is running the app announces itself on the local network and listens for FrostWire nodes nearby (holding Android's wifi multicast lock only for that), so same-network devices no longer depend on the router looping traffic back to its own public address; nothing is announced on mobile data or when you use a remote IceBridge, and every node found is still verified before it is trusted
  • fix:Results from peers that share their catalog are marked browsable again when a search returns more than a handful of results — the browsable flag was lost when larger result sets were streamed back in chunks, so only small answers showed the Browse Shared Torrents action
  • fix:The first-run wizard and Distributed Search settings now separate two choices: joining the IceBridge network (you can search, and anyone searching can find the torrents you are seeding by keyword, whether or not you share a catalog) and sharing your catalog (people can browse everything you are actively seeding and crawlers can index it); unchecking the catalog no longer reads as hiding from search, and the catalog switch is disabled while you are off the network
