Introduction to Fearless Geek OS

Fearless Geek OS is an idea I’ve had for about a year. Well, I’ve decided to move ahead on it. It’s currently a re-spin based on MX Linux-XFCE Edition.

Who is this created for? Well, as a web developer with an understanding of digital media content, I decided to create it for those needs. If you’re anyone who does anything in the realm of digital media creation, I hope this might be a re-spin for you.

I include developers within the realm of digital media creation. Developers are creating digital content, after all. Of course, just about any Linux distribution is great for developers. But if you’re someone who is making video, doing graphic design, audio, or more, I want this to be a great re-spin/distribution for you.

What makes Fearless Geek OS different?

I think too many Linux distributions made today aren’t doing anything new or different. It’s almost as if someone just slaps their own software in the distribution but doesn’t make any true modifications. Doing something like that is what I want to avoid.

In the first version of Fearless Geek OS, code named Punk Rawk Show, one thing we’re doing different is offering the Nix package manager right out of the box.

Another thing we’re doing is bringing a tiling mode to XFCE. In the panel, you’ll see this icon. It will have either a T or an F in it. T for tiling, or F for floating. You can switch between the modes.

Keep in mind, if you are using tiling mode, you will need to place the XFCE panel either on the top or the bottom. You will have issues if you place the panel on the left or right hand sides of the screen.

We have plans on writing a GUI and TUI installer for Nix packages as well for the second release of Fearless Geek OS.

Punk Rawk Show

I’m a big fan of ska and punk rock. I thought it would be fun to codename each release after ska and punk rock songs I enjoy. This first release is codenamed after the MxPX song Punk Rawk Show.

Awesome items included out of the box

Gum: If you do bash scripting, gum is a great tool to use to bash script in style. Made by Charmbracelet (https://charm.sh), it allows you to do really snazzy menus, formatting and coloring of text, tables, and more. Find out more and view the source code at https://github.com/charmbracelet/gum .

Helix: A Vim-like text editor which doesn’t require the setup that Vim would. For developers, it supports language servers right out of the box. The system is self-documenting like Emacs, but much easier to learn in my opinion. Find out more at https://helix-editor.com .

Zellij: A terminal multiplexer which is great for both those who are new to terminal multiplexing and those who are experienced with it. It’s described as “a terminal workspace with batteries included.” You have panes, tabs, and plugin support, and out of the box you have a helpful menu of keyboard shortcuts visibile to you. Multiplexers like Screen or Tmux may be intimidating to those inexperienced with the terminal or multiplexers in general. Zellij makes multiplexing easier. Learn more at https://zellij.dev .

Nix package manager: It’s the package manager that NixOS is based on. This package manager can also be installed on other Linux distributions. This package manager installs packages in a way where each one is isolated from each other. For developers, let’s say you need multiple versions of NodeJS or Python for various projects. This allows you to install all of them without conflicts. We also included direnv and nix-direnv to help turn your directories into development environments for those particular projects you are working on.

Streamdeck-UI: Are you a streamer? Or does your workflow involve the Elgato Stream Deck in any way? Streamdeck-UI is installed via the Nix package manager, and the system has already been pre-configured so the Stream Decks that Streamdeck-UI works out of the box. You want have to edit the Udev files.

Being based on MX Linux, you’ll also have access to the MX Tools. There’s a lot of MX branding remaining in this first release of Fearless Geek OS. For now, we’ll keep it there, but as we make more modifications, we’ll include more of the Fearless Geek OS branding.

Thank you to the following:

MX Linux: The distribution this is based on AntiX: The distribution that MX Linux is based on. It’s a very awesome distribution for those who need a lightweight system, too. Debian: Both MX Linux and AntiX are based on Debian. NixOS: For the awesome Nix package manager, and really an awesome operating system too.
