Dropbox Print 1.0.0.0
The idea comes from the script located at http://www.labnol.org/internet/print-from-mobile-phones/17827/. Thanks Amit Agarwal for the great idea!
Also, thanks to Alexandre Moore for the wonderful printer-folder icon, which I found at http://www.iconfinder.com/icondetails/2329/128/folder_print_icon. Some of his other excellent work can be found at http://sa-ki.deviantart.com/.
Usage:
Install the application on a machine that will be on when you want to print from your pda or smartphone. On the first run, the app will find your Dropbox folder and create a "PrintQueue" folder under it, and a "Log" folder. A settings window will also appear to let you change a few options. Minimize this by clicking the close ("X") button in the top-right. The app will stay in the system tray and wait for files to come to the PrintQueue folder.
At this point, using your handheld device of choice, upload a file to the PrintQueue folder of your dropbox account. As soon as the file gets copied back down to the PC running Dropbox Print, the app will find it, print it using the shell "Print" command (under the right-click drop down menu from explorer), and copy it into a time-stamped folder in the Log subfolder.
Troubleshooting:
The application currently depends on the windows shell for print functionality. Be sure to have applications installed to handle any file type that you wish to print. If you can't right-click on a file in Windows Explorer and see a "Print" option in the drop-down menu, this app will move the file into a folder under Log called "No File Association". A few examples of applications to handle some of your document types:
PDF files can be printed using Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader.
Office files (doc, xls, ppt...) can be printed using MS Office or OpenOffice.org
This version (1.0.0.0) is probably more accurately described as a beta version. It's numbered the way it is because that's the default in Visual C# Express. Imagine that. I've tested it as far as my available hardware will let me. More features and bugfixes to come as my family will allow.
