DriverGeek Files

DriverGeek installs the drivers it finds. Until now it read your machine, asked Windows Update what it had, and stopped there.

Tick a driver on the Updates screen and press Install. For each one, in order:

1. The gate. Boot-critical device, not running as administrator, System Protection off, nothing ticked — all refused before any work is done, each with the reason.
2. A System Restore point, through the same call Checkpoint-Computer makes. If Windows refuses because it already took one inside its own 24-hour limit, the existing point is used and the app says so. That Windows setting is not changed behind your back.
3. A copy of the driver you are running now, written to C:\ProgramData\DriverGeek\backup, with a text file recording exactly what was there.
4. The install, handed to Windows Update.

If any step fails the run stops there and tells you which one, and whether the machine was touched.

Boot-critical and storage controller drivers have no tick box at all. A storage driver that goes wrong is an unbootable machine, not a failed update.

Also in this release:

• The Scan button now shows a progress bar, changes to "Working…" and reports each step as it goes, instead of sitting silent for the minutes the Windows Update search can take.
• Scanning still runs as a normal user. The Updates screen offers Restart as administrator when you want to install something.
• Settings shows where old drivers are kept, with a button to open the folder.
• The sidebar note has gone.

Two downloads, both 64-bit Windows and self-contained:

• DriverGeekSetup.exe — installer. Per-user by default, so no UAC prompt to install.
• DriverGeek-portable.exe — portable. Nothing to install.

SHA256SUMS.txt is published with them so you can check what you downloaded. The binaries are not code signed, so Windows SmartScreen will warn the first time you run one.
