CamStudio at a GlanceCamStudio is a compact little program with some nice features tucked away to maximize its allure. Installation is a breeze. However, when you launch CamStudio, a private product upgrade is offered that has not been verified by SourceForge. You’ll have to decide if you want to take a chance on CamStudio’s private upgrade or not. Yet, once you launch CamStudio, you’ll find several helpful features to make your screen recording journey quite enjoyable. For example, controls to record an entire screen or a portion of it, sound options, and the ability to add comments to videos and screen captures. CamStudio and its codec are released under GPL license.

CamStudio records screen and audio activity on your computer to create AVI video files and turns them into bandwidth-friendly, streaming Flash videos (SWF). CamStudio also lets you add screen captions or video annotations to your recordings through anti-aliased images, or by producing a Webcam movie of yourself (screen in screen) on your desktop. And CamStudio comes with its own lossless codec that produces crystal clear results with a much smaller filesize compared some popular codecs, like Microsoft Video 1. Additional options include cursor controls, the ability to record an entire screen or a portion of it, and selections for output quality. Best of all, CamStudio is easy to use and navigate, plus it includes a built-in Help file.

Easy to use, a good recorder for home projects, low file size, the recording quality is good however is good enough to record at full screen.
**SourceForge project page is fine, camstudio.org is fishy** I get a feeling that the site camstudio.org is somehow not genuine now and something must have happened behind the scenes. The guy "TerryBritton" in the forums there seems to be very suspicious. I strongly suspect he just somehow took over the site and then wrapped the app up with malware installer. The project itself here on SourceForge is fine, but the problem is that it has not been updated for *more than 2 years*, so either something weird happened or it's just that the developers already abandoned the project. Anyways the site camstudio.org is pure rubbish now.
You fools complaining about adware, If you download the installer from sourceforge, then there is no adware. What you ninnys have done is clicked on an external link and downloaded a third party "downloader installer" and gone happyclicky on everything so it's your own silly fault for not READING everything before you click on stuff! If you just had done what I did and got the installer directly from sourceforge then there is no crap included. As for the program, pretty basic, and a few bugs with the help system, but it does what it claims.
I'ved used CamStudio on and off for the last few years, and it's OK, it gets the job done. I experienced issues with either video and/or sound here and there when I used it. I never experienced any of the spyware/malware/adware issues, but it was always a concern. Thanks to a comment here on sourceforge I tried Screenpresso for the first time today and I was impressed. The free version has branding in the video recordings, but the single-license price seems very reasonable. So far a much better experience than with CamStudio. UPDATE: FYI, the last time I downloaded and installed CamStudio was about 1 year or more ago on a computer that I no longer use. After reading some of the terrible reviews here regarding the spyware/malware/adware, it seems that these issues exist in the most recent version(s). As such, I will NOT be installing the most recent version. I'll stick with Screenpresso for now.
Beware the main project page at camstudio.org currently has a malware version of this download linked on their main page. "hxxps://..../CamStudio_Setup_v2.7.2_r326_(build_19Oct2013).exe" is the malicious link. Do not download that version. The malicious file is around 640kbs in size.
