I've been using this package for almost a year for work purposes; it was required for the project. I'm a design engineer, and normally use CATIA for design purposes. BRL-CAD and CATIA are about as far apart on the cost spectrum as possible: free to most expensive package out there.... So maybe my perspective isn't fair, but at the same time and frustration are costly.
With that out of the way, I'd say... I'd never recommend using BRL-CAD for design purposes. It is too difficult to make simple changes and understand your model. There is no simple way to add standard design features like fillets. I haven't tried to export to IGES or STEP (formats that you'd need to provide to a machine shop to make your part) but based on my experience trying to import those file formats, I wouldn't have confidence in the result.
All in all, BRL-CAD is a neat project and I'm sure there is a use for it, but I would not recommend it for design purposes.

This thing is fine if you are a real Linux Nerd - but if you just want to use it as a tool, its almost impossible - its a full download/compile effort, taking care to get it in the right folder - and even then it wouldn't start up - very, very unclear - there are much easier tools available than this - leave it for the Linux Nerds.

Thank you very much for the program under a free open source license!

Superb documentation and coding, providing an in-depth and fascinating insight into CAD. Thank you for making this project and sources available: your hard work and skills are greatly appreciated. Only one problem regarding the binary on Windows32 XP-Serice Pack 3. I get an error when launching MGED; directly after the console window appears, it quits with the message: "mged.exe is not a valid win32 application."

A very, very klunky interface. E.g. to run brl-cad on Ubuntu, you need to run mged from the command line. The process of changing attributes is also very tedious. This would have been a great package in the 1980's.

It's the best OpenSource CAD I've used

It works very well! Very Useful tool. I use this everyday.

I think the goal of most people to consume more program is facilitated not make life more difficult. Surely it's easy for fans of programming, but not for those who want to design something. Thanks anyway and good luck with your project.

i like it very much. easy to use and amazing. I love it!

Two words: LIGHTNING FAST!

I used it a lot, it is a modeler and very precise but it works with the coordinates and you can not do organic shapes flowing like sweep or loft, does not work with surfaces and rendering is outdated. Instead of BRL-CAD I recommend Blender!

Very useful tool, thanks!

Very smooth and non intrusive interface.

BRL-CAD has helped me greatly on my everyday tasks. Thank you so much for sharing.

Great project!

interesting but complicated CGS system
-
It's not a CAD. It's CGS-geometry creator and ray tracer. It's most similar to Blender (or Maya on Window$) - tool for create foto-realistic image and movie.

Good job! Thanks

The BEST software out there.

not so good-looking, but does what it should nicely...
