The use of smart antennas in wireless networks requires real time synchronization of the beamforming and the transmit/receive processes for the host devices that are equipped with such antenna systems.

To realize antenna beam-switching in real time, there are additional features that have to be introduced in the source code of the open source driver for IEEE802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN). Thus, the source code is modified to introduce extra elements which would enable the appropriate antenna beam to be used when the local station/node is communicating a specific neighbor node.
