is it possible (how ?) to change default location of .areca configuration
directory. I'm using Ubuntu Linux.
I want to make different "portable" installations of areca on crypted
volumens, but need that all configuration files are on these volumens.
Thanks

I have exactly the same question. I am using areca backup on Windows, but I
don't like where areca is saving my preferences. I would like to change the
folder destination. Could just manage to change the location of the workspace
itself, but the preferences.properties file remains in the .area folder.
Does anyone have a hint?
Greetings,
Daniel

This issue has a big impact on portability. Areca does not save the settings
in its own folder.
For example Amok Exifsorter uses the "-duser" parameter to solve this problem.

this is now available in v7.2.2
Just add -ws= and / or -cfg=<path to="" ".areca"="" subdirectory=""> as arguments
