There are some monitoring hooks already. You can look in the 
NIOConnectionServer. (We should really document these on a wiki.) Basically, 
you can do things like stat, ruok, dump, etc. by just telnetting to the 
service port and typing the command. That would be an easy first step for 
JMX.
