Currently Eclipse fails to open .class file from classes.jar of .aar archive

This is likely pure Eclipse (JDT?) issue

It is an JDT issue that the ClassFileEditor cannot handle other editor input types than org.eclipse.jdt.internal.ui.javaeditor.IClassFileEditorInput.
The only advice that I can give you here is to open class files from an archive using Open With/Other... and choose either an internal editor that can handle org.eclipse.ui.ide.FileStoreEditorInput and interpret a class file or an external program like jad and then use the extended command syntax provided by the Eclipse Zip Editor plugin.
E.g. jad -lnc -ff -p $p $x .java | $e org.eclipse.jdt.ui.CompilationUnitEditor

I close this issue because I think that solution will satisfy your needs.

The ability to handle either org.eclipse.ui.part.FileEditorInput if it is a file within the workspace or org.eclipse.ui.ide.FileStoreEditorInput if it is a file from outside the workspace should be provided by the editor or else files cannot be opened.

I would not report a bug against the Eclipse .class file editor because there is rarely a chance that this will be addressed. Moreover, the Eclipse .class file editor itself is not particularly useful I guess.
