Hello, First of all, I'm sorry for the worst cross-posting ever. My name's Stefano D'Angelo and I'm the author of NASPRO (http://naspro.atheme.org), a project whose main aim is to build up a system to make all sound processing APIs interoperable. Since my project was recently accepted to become part of the Atheme community (http://www.atheme.org) and began working close to the audacious (http://audacious-media-player.org) developers, I could see there actually were serious reasons behind the lack of standardization for sound processing in the arena of media players. Now, I wrote a first draft of a new sound processing API called EPAMP especially targetted at media players; you can find it here: http://naspro.atheme.org/content/epamp-draft-1 With this mail, I'm trying to get some feedback (possibly in the Talk page on the NASPRO wiki) about it and possibly to involve anyone who is interested in its development. Anyway, notice that the user interface part of the API is still missing and that my project (NASPRO) will support this new API, giving applications using it the possibility to access non-EPAMP plugins without touching a single line of code (currently supported APIs are audacious' and LADSPA, while DSSI, LV2, GStreamer and possibly VST are more or less planned for the near future). In case you're not interested and want to start a flame, please just ignore me. This message is being sent to the communities/developers behind the following projects: - Amarok - Aqualung - Audio Overload - BMPx - Banshee - cmus - Decibel Audio Player - Exaile - FALF Player - Freevo - GStreamer - Helix Player - Herrie - JaJuk - JuK (KDE multimedia) - Linux Audio Developers - KPlayer - Kaffeine - lamip - The LAMP - MPlayer - Miro - mpg123 - mpg321 - Muine - MPD - music on console - Noatun - ogg123 (vorbis-tools) - Ogle - Quod Libet - Rhythmbox - Sipie - SnackAmp - Sonata - Songbird - UADE - SMPlayer - VLC - wxMusik - XMMS2 - Xfmedia - Xine - Zinf If you know someone else who could be interested, feel free to forward this. Best regards, Stefano D'Angelo zan...@gm... |

Yeah, we all seem to have come up with a subtly different solution to the bitmap depth problem (see http://hg.thepriorities.com/zinf/main/rev/6fac96bf7e10) I just went with the one that seemed simpler when I merged. As far as I can tell from reading the GTK/GDK docs they are all equvialent in that they get the depth of the root window, but I could be wrong. Cool.. I'll see about pushing it upto sourceforge. One thing.. Your last merge seemed to remove the bitmap fix. Did you find another work around for getting the proper window depth? Hi, This is has finally reminded me to do something which I've been meaning to do for far too long, which is upload the recent (well when I say recent...) work I've done locally on Zinf (admittedly not much but hey it's something...) So, I've put a mercurial repository online at http://hg.thepriorities.com/zinf/main Probably the most interesting change is the inclusion of project files to build it using Visual Studio 2005! I've also done some work to finally remove the old music database and move everything over to using the new one instead (some functionality in my repo are still broken because of this). I'll look over the patch and apply it. I don't think there is a lot of active development, currently. David hough completed a nice new front end for zinf, that was to be the next version, however, development stalled. It does however, work pretty well and I use it everyday. You need to configure the build with configure --enable-experimental and change the default browser UI in ~/.zinf/preferences MusicBrowserUI: musicbrowsermm.ui On Mon, 2008-01-14 at 09:55 +0100, Fabio Checconi wrote: > Hi all, > this list seems to be not so active, anyway I've tried zinf after > a long time, and I had several problems building and running it. Hi all, this list seems to be not so active, anyway I've tried zinf after a long time, and I had several problems building and running it. This patch fixes the build issues reported here: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=20070811210027.1d4e2c92%40darkstar.localhost&forum_name=zinf-support and seems to be a correct fix to this tracker issue: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1033026&group_id=51494&atid=463479 Still getting segfaults on theme changes and on exit. Patch on top of 2.2.5, please consider applying. I'm posting the patch here and not on the tracker to ask also for the project status... is anyone still working on zinf? -- diff -Naurp zinf-2.2.5.orig/base/include/player.h zinf-2.2.5/base/include/player.h --- zinf-2.2.5.orig/base/include/player.h 2004-02-02 18:39:35.000000000 +0100 +++ zinf-2.2.5/base/include/player.h 2008-01-11 20:01:32.000000000 +0100 @@ -155,13 +155,13 @@ class Player : public EventQueue #define _EQUALIZER_ENABLE_ #ifdef _EQUALIZER_ENABLE_ - void Player::SetEQData(Event *pEvent); + void SetEQData(Event *pEvent); #endif // _EQUALIZER_ENABLE_ #undef _EQUALIZER_ENABLE_ #define _VISUAL_ENABLE_ #ifdef _VISUAL_ENABLE_ - void Player::SendVisBuf(Event *pEvent); + void SendVisBuf(Event *pEvent); #endif // _VISUAL_ENABLE_ #undef _VISUAL_ENABLE_ diff -Naurp zinf-2.2.5.orig/base/include/queue.h zinf-2.2.5/base/include/queue.h --- zinf-2.2.5.orig/base/include/queue.h 2003-09-16 19:34:53.000000000 +0200 +++ zinf-2.2.5/base/include/queue.h 2008-01-11 20:00:47.000000000 +0100 @@ -24,6 +24,7 @@ ________________________________________ #ifndef INCLUDED_QUEUE_H_ #define INCLUDED_QUEUE_H_ +#include <assert.h> #include "config.h" #include "mutex.h" diff -Naurp zinf-2.2.5.orig/ui/zinf/unix/include/GTKBitmap.h zinf-2.2.5/ui/zinf/unix/include/GTKBitmap.h --- zinf-2.2.5.orig/ui/zinf/unix/include/GTKBitmap.h 2003-09-16 19:36:23.000000000 +0200 +++ zinf-2.2.5/ui/zinf/unix/include/GTKBitmap.h 2008-01-14 09:19:00.000000000 +0100 @@ -72,6 +72,8 @@ class GTKBitmap : public Bitmap Error ReadleShort(FILE *file, gushort *ret); Error ReadleLong(FILE *file, gulong *ret); + static GdkWindow *m_rootWindow; + GdkPixmap *m_Bitmap; GdkPixmap *m_MaskBitmap; diff -Naurp zinf-2.2.5.orig/ui/zinf/unix/src/GTKBitmap.cpp zinf-2.2.5/ui/zinf/unix/src/GTKBitmap.cpp --- zinf-2.2.5.orig/ui/zinf/unix/src/GTKBitmap.cpp 2003-09-16 19:36:23.000000000 +0200 +++ zinf-2.2.5/ui/zinf/unix/src/GTKBitmap.cpp 2008-01-14 09:19:29.000000000 +0100 @@ -51,6 +51,8 @@ RGBQUAD; #define BI_RLE4 2 #define BI_BITFIELDS 3 +static GDKWindow *GTKBitmap::m_rootWindow; + GTKBitmap::GTKBitmap(string &oName) :Bitmap(oName) { @@ -59,7 +61,9 @@ GTKBitmap::GTKBitmap(string &oName) m_Bitmap = NULL; m_MaskBitmap = NULL; gdk_threads_enter(); - m_GC = gdk_gc_new(gdk_window_foreign_new(GDK_ROOT_WINDOW())); + if (m_rootWindow == NULL) + m_rootWindow = gdk_window_foreign_new(GDK_ROOT_WINDOW()); + m_GC = gdk_gc_new(m_rootWindow); gdk_threads_leave(); m_width = 0; m_height = 0; @@ -72,8 +76,10 @@ GTKBitmap::GTKBitmap(int iWidth, int iHe m_oBitmapName = oName; shape_set = false; gdk_threads_enter(); - m_Bitmap = gdk_pixmap_new(NULL, iWidth, iHeight, - gdk_visual_get_best_depth()); + if (m_rootWindow == NULL) + m_rootWindow = gdk_window_foreign_new(GDK_ROOT_WINDOW()); + m_Bitmap = gdk_pixmap_new(m_rootWindow, iWidth, iHeight, + gdk_drawable_get_depth(m_rootWindow)); m_MaskBitmap = gdk_pixmap_new(NULL, iWidth, iHeight, 1); m_GC = gdk_gc_new(gdk_window_foreign_new(GDK_ROOT_WINDOW())); gdk_threads_leave(); @@ -150,7 +156,7 @@ Error GTKBitmap::LoadBitmapFromDisk(stri newbuf = gdk_pixbuf_add_alpha(pixbuf, m_bHasTransColor, m_oTransColor.red, m_oTransColor.green, m_oTransColor.blue); - gdk_pixbuf_render_pixmap_and_mask(newbuf, &m_Bitmap, &m_MaskBitmap, + gdk_pixbuf_render_pixmap_and_mask(newbuf, &m_Bitmap, &m_MaskBitmap, 255); m_width = gdk_pixbuf_get_width(newbuf); m_height = gdk_pixbuf_get_height(newbuf); @@ -546,7 +552,8 @@ Error GTKBitmap::LoadBitmapFromDisk(stri gdk_gc_destroy(gc); } - m_Bitmap = gdk_pixmap_new(NULL, w, h, gdk_visual_get_best_depth()); + m_Bitmap = gdk_pixmap_new(m_rootWindow, w, h, + gdk_drawable_get_depth(root)); gdk_draw_rgb_image(m_Bitmap, m_GC, 0, 0, w, h, GDK_RGB_DITHER_MAX, data, w * 3); |

Dear Bobber, Thanks for your reply. I have downloaded the STL files. Is this port something different? How do i get it into MSV6? I mean is it in a plugin? Or are you saying that the latest version i.e. zinf 2.2.1 cannot be compiled with MSV6 at all? Rishi Bobber Cheng <bo...@mi...> wrote: You need STLPort to compile zinf-2.2.1 with MSVC 6. Hi, As some of you have noticed my arch repository has been offline for a while, as my university hosting for it was deleted when I graduated last month. So, I've put it up again at the new address of http://www.thepriorities.com/zinf/arch2005/ This should be a direct copy of what used to be online at the old address, though I don't currently have a computer with both Arch and the Internet to test it with. If there are any problems with it let me know. As far as I remember you should only have to execute # tla archive-register http://www.thepriorities.com/zinf/arch2005/ to start using the new address. Cheers, David. PS. I've just got back from holiday, so my apologies that this has taken a while. |

Hi, As far as I understand it, after 2.2.1 quite a few changes have been made to the core of zinf, which required changes in the user interface plugins. Unfortunately, there hasn't been anyone willing to make the required changes to the windows specific ui plugins, so (as you have found) they are no longer consistent with the rest of the code. This is in part due to the fact that we have two seperate sets of plugins for linux and win32, both of which do the exact same thing just with different UI toolkits. Ideally, we just want a single interface that works on both linux and windows. The linux user interface has been written in GTK, which is actually cross platfrom. Therefore, with the mingw port that is now in CVS I've tried to make the linux GTK interface (which is up to date) work on windows as well, so that there is only one user interface for all platforms, instead of maintaing two seperate ones. The CVS code is also in the middle of transferring to a new completely rewritten music browser and database systems, so, unfortunately for windows support, most of my work is concentrated on this. Anyway, you said previously that you were looking to add video support to Zinf under windows. Unless your willing to work on restoring windows support for the CVS code as well, I'd recommend basing your work on version 2.2.1 as that is fully working on windows. The CVS code is in various states of disrepair on windows. And, of course, any work that you do, can always be ported to a later version of Zinf when windows support is restored. Hope that helps, David On 27/07/06, Bobber Cheng <bob...@gm...> wrote: > Dear David, > > I'm glad to hear voice from zinf dev :-) > > We had compiled 2.2.1 with msvc 6 and STLport. Dear David, I'm glad to hear voice from zinf dev :-) We had compiled 2.2.1 with msvc 6 and STLport. Also we had modified cvs version and compiled many modules with msvc 6. But I find win32 code on cvs is old and not sync with gtk code. We hesitate to choose 2.2.1 or cvs version. 2.2.1 worked but it's old, while cvs version need some change to make it work. Could you please tell me different between 2.2.1 and cvs version? Bests, Bobber Cheng 2006/7/27, David Hough <da...@th...>: > > Hi, > > What version of Zinf were you trying to compile? Hi, What version of Zinf were you trying to compile? As far as I know 2.2.1 was the last version that could be compiled using msvc 6, though I never managed it myself. The current CVS version of Zinf does now support being compiled using the free MingW compiler (www.mingw.org), though using the new experimental user interface only, which requires GTK. If you plan on using ms visual c++ for working on Zinf I'd say using a newer version was probably required, (visual c++ 2005 express is available free to everyone via the microsoft website) as the c++ compiler in version 6 has serious problems following the C++ standards. Whatever compiler you're using you will need to install quite a few additional libraries as well, if you want to compile all the plugins. I can't remember the exact list though unfortunately. If you want to try and compile Zinf using the MingW compiler I can try and help. I can't really help with using Visual C++ as I've never managed to compile Zinf using it myself. To get started with MingW you'll need to it setup with a development environment, something like MSYS or Cygwin. There should be various tutorials around the web. Then checkout the current version of Zinf from CVS, (for instructions see our sourceforge page and click on CVS), and try running "autogen.sh" and see what error messages you get. Hope that might help, David On 24/07/06, Bobber Cheng <bob...@gm...> wrote: > Dear All, > > I had download sgi stl and try to compile zinf with msvc 6.0 many > times, no succeed. Hi, Now that developer CVS access is working again, I've commited some fixes for building 64bit versions of the experimental build. This is working for me on 64 bit Mandriva 2006 with GCC 4. If anyone still has issues with this, please let me know. This is of course avaliable from both CVS and the arch archive zin...@so.../zinf--cvstrunk. Sourceforge is not currently syncing the developer and anonymous CVS, so for the moment you'll have to use the arch archive for anonymous access. Hi, I agree, a HOWTO detailing how to get the experimental version of Zinf running on a computer would be great. Probably wouldn't need to be much more then the details of all the necessary dependecies, how to get current version of from CVS or arch, and a few build instructions. Here's a few notes that may help if you do want to do this, they're probably all mentioned somewhere in the mailing list archive as well. - CVS doesn't include a pre-generated configure script, you need to execute autogen.sh to create it - autogen.sh requires most (if not all, i can't remember) of the normally optional dependices to be installed - to build the new stuff, you need to specifiy --enable-experimental as an option to configure - To use the new stuff, you need to change the MusicBrowserUI option in ~/.zinf/preferences. Instead of musicbrowser.ui, it should be musicbrowsermm.ui - To run zinf from the build dir, so you don't need to do 'make install', execute ./base/zinf - To debug, 'gdb ./base/zinf' doesn't work. Instead execute 'libtool --mode=execute gdb ./base/zinf' If you have any problems, don't hesitate to ask. Hi Henry, This project has slowed down quite a bit. However, there is a nice new interface and metadata system available to those that are willing to run the experimental version of the code. If you look through the developers archive, you may see that David Hough and I have been publishing source code with arch(tla). The experimental version has a much nicer interface. You might want to describe the few easy steps to get it working. There is stuff in the mailing list about it. On the technical documentation side, you could start by making a FAQ. There are few typical installation snafus, like zinf finding an old plugin directory or using an old database. Hi, Heres an early christmas present for everyone, I've written a fairly simple last.fm plugin for Zinf. A quick summary of last.fm (used to be called audioscrobbler) for those of you who have never heard of it (taken from their website): "Join the social music revolution at Last.fm. It's fun, it's free, it's all about the music. You get your own online music profile that you can fill up with the music you like. This information is used to create a personal radio station and to find users who are similar to you. Last.fm can even play you new artists and songs you might like. It's addictive, it's growing, it's free, it's music." -- http://www.last.fm Basically, the plugin submits what music you listen to, then last.fm works out what other music you might like, based on what other people who like the same music listen to. The plugin is avaliable from my arch repository as da...@th...-2005/zinf--lastfm--0.1 It uses a copy of libscrobbler (released under GNU from last.fm) to actually talk with the servers. To get it to work, you need to compile with --enable-experimental (it uses musicdb to get track metadata), then add lastfm.ui to SecondryUIs in your preferences, as well as add your username and password. e.g. SecondaryUI: lastfm.ui LastFMUsername: username LastFMPassword: password There are currently a few issues which I know of, - It ignores any proxy settings you may have - It can easily get confused if your metadata isn't valid UTF-8 - It's currently using the "tst" plugin id when talking to the server, as Zinf hasn't been assigned an ID yet - There is no way to set the username/password in the preferences dialog Feel free to play around with it and tell me if you have problems.
