Check at this point what the driver sees with:

$ iwlist scanning

Is your AP listed?

 emma@BreezyDown:~$ sudo iwpriv eth0 set_Region 1
 emma@BreezyDown:~$ iwlist scanning
 lo        Interface doesn't support scanning.
 
 sit0      Interface doesn't support scanning.
 
 eth0      No scan results
 
 
 Scanning works fine and picks up my access point using other devices.
