After applying Remco's patch to version r48 of the driver, I like him was able to get kismet to operate with zd1211. During this time I had a few correspondences with Mike Kershaw (the programmer of Kismet) in IRC. According to him he received some early data dumps with malformed packets. This packets made it hard to write a Kismet <==> zd1211 interface. What Mike said about the malformed packets seamed to me to correspond with what Remco said in his letter of 2005-12-27. I later informed Mike Kershaw that I was able to get Kismet to operate with zd1211 when I applied a patch. Mike said that he would be interested in updating Kismet after the patch was part of the mainline driver. I would like to see Kismet and working with zd1211, so I would be grateful if the patch was merged into the mainline of zd1211 driver development. I did have two problems that occurred while using r48+Remco_patch and the hostap interface. One problem was that signal strength. According to Kismet the signal strength was ether not reported or when it was reported it was always the exact same combination of numbers. The way I see it, this problem could be caused by zd1211 not reporting it's signal strength when in monitor mode. On the other hand zd1211 could have been reporting signal strength but Kismet did not find the information. This makes sense because the interface between Kismet and zd1211 was not specifically written for zd1211 but was written for hostap. The second problem I had was that the after 2 to 5 minutes of operating Kismet would shutdown because in its own words "the interface was no longer available". Mike Kershaw said this was usually caused be the operation of a DHCP daemon or "pump" but it could be caused be a bug in the driver. Nether of those programs appeared to be operation in my computer. Thanks for your consideration. Reference to Remco's patch http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=9328072&forum_id=43808 |
