Hi goobie,
I've tried to reproduce your problem. In one case I was able to reproduce it.
I could solve it this way:
First I removed all yaacc data via the android settings section "Apps".
Second I have reinstalled yaacc

After that the yaacc renderer and server where visible in the network.

May be this solved the problem on your device, too. If not please leave your comment...

So I cleared data and cache, uninstalled YAACC and installed 1.1.2 - now I get consistent force closes when I try to enter the Settings menu and it freezes when I try to browse my UPNP shares on the NAS... :(

hmm that's interesting. We have tested the app on Android 4.0.3, 4.2.2 and 4.3 without such a problem. Are you able to send me the exception which is thrown if yaacc runs on error? You can find it in the logcat.

Ok, I think I found the problem. I've created a new nightly build (http://sourceforge.net/projects/yaacc/files/nightlybuild/YAACC-2013-12-02_22-23-21.apk/download)
Please try it! We had some merging problems during building the new release. I don't know why this problem have not been appeared on our devices, hmmmm.
Hope your initial problem will be fixed, too. Otherwise please let me know in order to look forward to fix it...

  So I am trying to use Yaacc as a Media Renderer and thus did activate
  Media Receiver (I presume that is what it should do, anyway) on my
  Android devices (Nexus 7 2013, CX 803 Android Stick, Marsboard A10).
  But while I can see the Media Server on other devices (as well as play
  browse other devices and play to the local render), a renderer does not
  show up anywhere in the network.
  
  I don't think this a networking issue, as BubbleUPNP works just fine as

    The original problem sadly seems to be around still. Neither Windows 7
    nor BubbleUPNP see the yaacc media receiver and using yaacc to control
    BubbleUPNP also works, however, both can access the yaacc media server.

One more idea: BubbleUPNP has an option that forces it to broadcast all devices it creates every 10s which seems to help in some bizarre cases when the devices do not otherwise show up.

ok I will implement a "broadcast boost" for the receiver service. I'll give you feedback if it is finished. Maybe we can solve the problem this way

now it's your turn :-) I've build two test versions:

Please test first this version:

The version includes an upnp alive notification event which can be configured in the settings menu

After that please test this version:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/yaacc/files/nightlybuild/YAACC-2013-12-03_23-42-37.apk/download

That version uses another UDN to identify the upnp device, too. If I'm right with this version you will be able to see the renderer but not the yaacc upnp server.

Please let me know your results. If it works expected I will create a final Version...

First version: no change in visibility of the renderer (additionally, it is weird that BubbleUPNP can browse the server but Windows 7 shows it to be empty).

Second version: The server disappears and the renderer appears, albeit in a somewhat strange way. In Windows 7, I see it as a renderer but cannot play to it (device does not respond). In BubbleUPNP, it is shown as a server but definitely named MediaReceiver. Some progress, but not quite there yet it seems.

FWIW, I also tried the Foobar2000 UPNP plugin, that one cannot see the device at all (I can however browse its server from yaacc). I have also moved back to stock KitKat so it clearly wasn't a ROM issue.

I will do another round of testing later today as I am about to replace my wireless router for odd behavior (two laptops notoriously get kicked out since a couple of days), maybe that will yield something, too.

  With the latest build I can see some progress:
  
  Windows now sees both the server and the renderer but is unable to use
  either: the server remains empty upon browsing; the renderer shows up in
  explorer but is not shown in play to in WMP
  
  Foobar2000 can see the server and play music from it, does not see the
  renderer
  
  BubbleUPNP sees the server and can play music from it, does not see
  the renderer (somehow it is ironic that BubbleUPNP works worse than
  Windows considering that it also uses Cling...)
  
  Additionally, there seems to be a FC when hitting stop on the server
  page and sometimes when entering the Settings menu from that page. I
  will try to create a logcat later today (perhaps tomorrow)

Thank you for your report. I've tested the media server and renderer on linux using upnp inspector and vlc. Both are working. Now I will try to reproduce your problem using a windows environment with wmp. At the moment for me it's not clear what is wrong...

showing and using the renderer with foobar2000 should be possible now.

the media server isn't shown in WMP yet, but I have got an idea what is wrong.

  codec error upon play, it also shows the server but it still ends up

That's interesting. Did you really can't see the renderer using foobar2000? I was able to control yaacc using this version of foobar2000: http://www.foobar2000.org/getfile/89ea5235dadd7f94deac35fe661317a4/foobar2000_v1.2.9.exe
