Why don't we make an option to insert TeX formulas using a paste feature, or some kind of external input window which can parse TeX expressions and render them as objects within the .xoj file...

I use Xournal extensively to write formulas and this would really make my notes a lot neater since I'm also fluent in TeX.

I don't quite get the point -- if you are typing a document with math formulas why don't you directly use TeX ?
I'm primarily thinking of xournal as a tool for taking handwritten notes and making handwritten annotations, so I'm not sure I understand your use scenario...

I vote for Tex function in Xournal! I can use TeX in other editing tools, say TexMacs, but it's very difficult to insert some handwriting or any sketches along the formulas, say, sketching the curve of f(x) = sin(x)/x. On the other hand, Xournal is the perfect tool to do quick handwriting or sketches, but TeX will definitely make the formulas looks nicer!

Combining Tex will make Xournal the perfect tool for scientific noting: writing a lot of formulas, and sketch here and there, etc.

I'd say there are already several useful ways to combine Xournal and TeX:

    - make sketches in Xournal, export to PDF and include in TeX; perfect for hand drawn illustrations

    - set your document in TeX, compile to PDF, and annotate in Xournal; this is perfect for handwritten solutions to typeset problem sets, e.g. (though I do it differently using pdfpages and everyshi to include the Xournal output)

I'd say that including formulas in Xournal would be the exceptional case, and it will be possible once Xournal has image import. For "TeXing in Xournal" you would really need to have some form of object link. Or the ability to cut & paste PDF glyphs. Not likely.

On the other hand, the command line export feature is much more likely to happen. (The existing patch works with glitches.)

This would be nice but I think there are more important things atm ;)
