The ruler tool would be much more useful if it could draw only horizontal and vertical lines (and maybe diagonal) when pressing another key (such as Ctrl) while using it. It would also be nice if it would attach to other lines when beginning and ending the drag using another key (shift?)

Hmmm, sounds too "ad hoc" and not appropriate for tablets anyway (most of us don't have a shift or control key available handy while writing on a tablet).

The shape recognizer included in version 0.4.2 auto-adjusts strokes that are kind of straight and kind of horizontal or vertical to make them into horizontal/vertical lines. Hopefully this takes care of the first part of your request.

I'm also thinking about adding a "snap to grid" feature which would naturally cause things to attach to each other more easily, corresponding to the second part of your request - but this is still in the future.

I'd like to see the Ruler mappable to a pen button, such that the ruler is turned on when the button is depressed (using whatever brush is active), and off otherwise (regardless of whether the ruler is currently turned on through the GUI). Or, more appropriate to the original feature req, a snap-ruler functionality mapped to a pen button.

Snap to grid would be awesome to have indeed.

I'd also like the ruler to behave a bit more like a real ruler, so I could use it to measure distances and not only draw lines.

And with regards to drawing, if I want to draw a long line that crosses two points (but doesn't begin at any of them), it's kind of tedious with the current ruler.

I want to draw a lot of mathematical stuff ;-)
