It would be nice to have an option to make the toolbars vertical, so they can occupy either the left or the right edge of the window or full-screen.

Use case: I have prepared some PDF slides in 4:3 format, which I want to present and draw on during the lecture using xournal. The projectors available in lecture theatres are increasingly in 16:9 wide-screen format. So when I go into full-screen mode and scale the page to fill the hight of the display, there will be empty margins left to the left and right side of the page, which could be occupied neatly by a vertical toolbar.

The existing horizontal toolbars occupy very precious vertical space, especially on a wide-screen display.

I second this. This would be a very useful feature.

If not possible, it would be really useful if the toolbars could either auto-hide in full screen mode, or stack horizontally to occupy lesser space.

Hello, I am using xournal recently and it is very useful.
I am agree with this feature request. In fact I'm searching this, because in a pdf full screen view both sides are free, so it can be put the toolbar in one of them and free the top ot the screen. This way the pdf background could display in all vertical screen.

I don't see any way to make it easily configurable at runtime without rewriting some portions of code, but if you're willing to live with a quick-and-dirty patch, here's something approaching what you want. It's not clean at all. You'll probably want to remove the font selection button from the second toolbar (add "fontButton" to shorten_menu_items in config file), and shouldn't attempt to play with the interface_vorder... config options.
