i know you saw this thread (https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1925309&group_id=163434&atid=827736) already. But i have now found a different ocr-software under GPL: https://sourceforge.net/projects/stihrs/
Being a Professor in these days of lockdown, I am using your great free software more frequently. Though this feature request is pretty old and each of us are busy, I think, its relevance has increased by many folds in the recent time. I have looked at the other FLOSS alternatives such as STIHRS https://sourceforge.net/projects/stihrs/ and wondering if such a module can be linked to Xournal++.
I, being a Civil Engineer, do not have much experience in software engineering as such, but I am an avid user of FLOSS for my teaching and research. However, some of my students are good at such jobs and I can possibly get them involved, if you guide them a bit how to go about it.
Would like to listen to you.
Sincere thanks for providing us your time to build, maintain and improve your very useful software Xournal++. I know, from my system updates, that you are adding new builds to the Ubuntu PPA, almost daily.
With warm regards
Sukumar

a further program which implements handwriting recognition ist
yudit (http://www.yudit.org/en/howto/freehand/)

But Handwriting recognition would be really interesting...
