Hi-
I've been looking forward to rootless XDarwin, hoping that
this would allow use of X on both my Powerbook's internal
display and an external monitor as one 2048x768 display. I
currently use Mac X in this fashion and this is one major
impediment to moving fulltime to OS X.
So I installed the rootless path 1.0a1 and I can report
partial success. I can drag an X client partially onto the
second display, however no client I tried could be completely
off the primary screen. The parts on the second screen
displayed fine and responded to the mouse, I just couldn't
drag them completely onto the second screen. For the
record, I'm using Mac OS X 10.0.4 with XFree 4.1.0 and the
recently released rootless patch. I tried X clients from the
Powerbook and from remote sources. The X setup is the
default, including the use of twm.

Rootless mode doesn't yet work on multiple screens. For technical reasons, multiple screen rootless is no easier than full-screen.

Good news: I borrowed a second video card for my machine, and multiple monitor support is almost done. If you're ambitious, a preliminary patch has been posted.

I was surprised by your first message, since things had seemed to
work, except for the inability to completely place a window on the
second display. I'm glad that things are actually much further
along. I'll try out the patch later this week.

All Quartz modes support multiple monitors with Xinerama in XDarwin 1.0a2.
