it seems the GL emulation is broken in XMLVM's Java emulator. I just
tried the native (i.e., cross-compiled) version of NeHeLesson4 and that
works perfectly fine.
Note that while it is convenient to have a Java emulator, it is a lot of
work to maintain. We rather focus on the cross-compilation and not
mimicking iOS API on a desktop Java.
