The purpose of this directory is that normal XMLVM users don't have to worry about it at all. Naming it .cache is a convention I have seen in other tools as well. Btw, you can also switch of caching, if you want to, using the --no-cache option with XMLVM. It can help in certain situation, e.g. if you make changes to the style sheet.
