Although in general I understand the reason for being hidden, I believe that there should be a way to make it "visible" to the user.
At a minimum I believe that this folder should not be hidden, so that the user might understand what is happening.
If this is not elegant enough, we can make other optimizations, like produce in the tmp folder, or specify a target directory where all possible temporary/intermediate files could be stored.
