Hi, I am not a lawyer (only my wife is). However, I think that you need some kind of legal entity called XMLVM so that the copyright laws can work. It may also depend on the country as well, but I think that forming some kind of legal entity is the right way to go. One possibility to avoid that is to use an already existing umbrella organization like Apache Foundation or the Software Freedom Law Center ( http://www.softwarefreedom.org/services/) However, this method would probably have an impact on the potential future commercialization of the project.
