xmlstarlet-1.4.0 make compiles without error; make check -> FAIL: examples/ed-backref2; no other fatal errors.
Same result on RHEL6 and Fedora 11 systems.
I recently rechecked the tests with the latest libxml and libxslt versions and fixed several tests that failed because of XML formatting issues. I expect this issue will be fixed too.

I git'ed the most recent xmlstarlet commit (into dir xmlstar) and noticed
xmlstarlet-1.4.0/examples/results/ed-backref2.out xmlstar/examples/results/ed-backref2.out
are now different. Furthermore, your new examples/results/ed-backref2.out matches what I get, so I can confirm your fix. Thank you.

Can you post the versions of libxml and libxslt (should be included in output from xmlstarlet --version).
Also the output from running ed-backref2. You'll have to cd to into the examples directory to run it (yeah I should probably fix that).
