Special characters given via their hex code, e.g. ↗ can be used throughout the normal text. However, they are not rendered in footnote texts, but just ignored (see attachment).
By incident I discovered the possible cause: For footnotes the font-family is not correctly inherited. Instead "Times New Roman" is selected. If I choose the text font explicitly, everything is fine.
