Hi there,
I've been using XFE in the past two weeks, and have
couple of ideas to be shared with the devTeam :-)
Let's talk about them :-)
*** Archiver tool support:
There are couple of archives ppl are working with,
therefore an easy way to view/extract archive formats
would come handy. The Gnome file-roller tool is a hell
to use (if you have to deal with more than 1 archie a
week :-)), so this could help :-)
- Tools to depend on (unpack):
arc/bzip2/cab/gunzip/lha/rpm/tar/unace/unarj/unrar/unzip
- Tools to depend on (pack)
arj/rar/zip/tar/gzip/bzip2
*** crc/md5 verification/creation
Sounds simple and it is, means 2 dialogs to
create/verify globally, shuold be easy to implement.
*** fstab mount view:
ALT+F1 and ALT+F2 persumably would be a nice to select
the actual mount you'd like to work on (F1 on panel 1,
F2 on panel 2), thisway it'd be easier to reach
different mounted sections, network mounts, etc.
would make life easier big time :-)
*** mount/umount
Nothing more than gnome-diskmounter with nice icons
(switchable I assume)
*** tabbed view
Saw couple of things before on the forums/bugs list,
however I'd suggest not to implemnet 3 panels then
4,5,6,etc - how about following an old working perfect
way, using tabs and let the user deal with different
dirs and files within them.
*** controls on the bottom
Check mc, seems to be really cool with the F functions
listed on the bottom.
*** commandline (one-line shell)
one lil' line on the bottom or top, can be
sh/bash/korn/whatever the user loves (aka CTRL+E to
migrate somewhere as a toolbar).
*** gnome2 look
this would solve all the feature requests regarding
skinning possibilities
*** network features
samba connection: can easily be done via gnome-vfs
ftp connection: same applies
sftp connection: ssh/sftp, with ssh options available
(port setting, private key, ssh version, etc)
http connection: to be able to download multiple links
within a .html file :-)
Bookmarks for everyone of course :-)
*** editable toolbar
The toolbar on the bottom should have what else the
user wants to see in there ;-)
*** file operation queuing
This is something I miss almost from all the
applications I met and for file transfers. Would like
to have an editable queue list where you can add and
remove file operations, ftp downloads, etc, which
should be saved somewhere with the configuration files
so can be reopened next time when the app launches and
continued where it got stopped from the last time.
This feature saves lots of phisical time (imagine 3
unpacks, 5 downloads, 2 uploads to sftp in a queue,
happening automatically, so you can go and have a bath,
a coffee, breakfast and do ya girl) :-)
A "shut down when complete" might come handy here as well.
*** advanced bookmarking
As I told you about my networking ideas, just came into
my mind that a simple bookmarking would not be enough
for this. As the user might want to store usernames and
passwords as well, I think the best way to head to
would be an encrypted database type thing that reminds
me most to a small password manager tool attached to
the default "I'll remember your links" feature.
*** plugin/extension support/user functions
This would help you guys a lot (for example, take a
look at mozilla firefox, extensions are the ones
driving its future atm., and well, don't you ever
forget old mc's F2, where you could even "select * from
sky").
Thanks a lot for reading all this stuff, I hope you
don't hate me enough after all this :D
Cheers,
MBJr.

No, I don't hate you :-) Such features requests always give
me some ideas. However, my time is limited and I can only
implement some features here and there.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your ideas...

We already have tons of mc-like GUI file managers, among
them: Gentoo (the file manager, not the distro) and XNC.
However, these GUI file managers have buttons at bottom, not
really F-shortcuts.
Showing the shortcuts somewhere might be nice, but I'm not
sure if I want this feature. In fact, I think there will be
only a few F-shortcuts available (ok, I'm not a XFE user,
yet; I have no idea about XFE shortcuts)
*** editable toolbar

user wants to see in there ;-)
Agreed. Every toolbar should be customizable. Sometimes I
would like the flexibility I have in Opera browser in all
other software... :) (Opera has actions; actions can be
combined to form new actions; any action can be assigned to
any keyboard shortcut, mouse gesture, toolbar button or menu
item)
*** gnome2 look

I don't think this would be possible. This would require
changes in FOX toolkit. Basically, everything should be
rewritten in GTK.
Without too much work, I guess we can, at most, customize
colors, fonts and icons.

I guess most of these can be easily done in KDE (using
kioslaves, I guess). Konqueror and any KDE application
supports that. gnome-vfs looks like a similar solution.
Implementing these things in XFE would add KDE or Gnome as
dependency, or would need to be implemented "by hand" (of
course, using some library).

Use "lynx -dump", or use Opera browser (and press Ctrl+J). ;

Very nice things to implement!
*** network features
*** file operation queuing
*** crc/md5 verification/creation
this features would be amazing!!

But if you use all this ideas then xfe isn't so tight. I use it with icewm because it saves lot of memory and CPU.
