way the Windows Explorer does - more stable browsing would be
recommended)

Couldn't this better be done by external tools, like FUSE
and "SMB for FUSE"? Having a look at
http://hannibal.lr-s.tudelft.nl/~vincent/fusesmb/ , this
seems to offer exactly what is asked for, without extending
xfe itself.
