Some macro definitions not perfectly set. Now I have tested 1.41 for use with Hurd and kfreebsd on Debian. You found my patches as attachment. Perhaps that's enough to solve you founded bug.
i installed 'xfe' through freebsd's binary package management 'pkg install'. i didn't compile the source code myself. it seems that user needs to recompile the source code with provided patch to fix the issue, correct?

thanks! I untarred the file and got three .patch files. how do i apply them?
Go into source directory and run for each patch:
pathc -p1 <patchfile

This is fixed in Xfe 1.42.
