In xfe 1.37 and 1.35 I see the name of the directory displayed in a weird way (see attachment), as if there is a label behind the directory buttons. This half-hidden label displays only the first directory that I open after starting xfe by double clicking a directory in the panel (not in the tree structure). If I change directories, no matter how, it does not change anymore.
I compiled xfe on Linux Mint 16 (15 was the same) with the libfox-dev 1.6.49 from the xfe project page.
That the label doesn't change once it's written isn't quite true. Sometimes, further directory changes will write on top of it. This is basically adding more and more pixels.
I don't see such things on Ubuntu, nor in Debian. So it's probably related to your system.
Perhaps you should try to recompile your FOX library and then Xfe.

I have the problem reported by hk298 with fox 1.6.50 and xfe 1.37. My relatively standard settings are attached. I can reproduce it in both fvwm and flubox.

I don't see this bug in my Ubuntu boxes (14.04 and 14.10). Could you try with Xfe 1.40? Perhaps a font issue?

I can still reproduce it in xfe 1.40. This is particularly easy to reproduce with very long directory names, if that can help.
Changing font didn't help.
Could you send me your actual .config/xfe directory?
Can you tell me more about your desktop? Window manager, version, etc.
Find .config/xfe attached.
I am running on slackware 14.1. My window manager is fluxbox 1.3.5 (zimek_green style). No desktop. I can also reproduce it on fvwm 2.6.5 so I lean to believe that it is unlikely to be window manager dependent.
I did some tests with fvwm and fluxbox on my Ubuntu 15.04 box and I still can't reproduce the bug.
I was never be able to reproduce this bug, so I close it now.
