any chance of extending dvitype to be able to dump xdv? it's not much, is it? it would be so helpful for debugging. i don't know how Jonathan got along without it. is there some other way to dump an xdv now?
I have a more or less complete XDV support in dviasm, I just did not get to finish the last bits of it. I’ll try to finish it and publish it somewhere.

that's great. it would be just to update dviasm on ctan in the normal way.
i am sure chof has zero interest in continuing as the maintainer of dviasm - he didn't do anything since the original release in 2008. i can write him+ctan about making you the maintainer whenever you're ready.

The new dviasm is now hosted on GitHub: https://github.com/khaledhosny/dviasm, it should handle most aspects of XDV files that current versions of XeTeX use. If there are no major issues, I intend to upload it to CTAN sometime next week.
